Hey y'all! Ok, today is the start of my daughter's 3-day fecal collection for fat analysis. I have kind of a gross question I hadn't thought of....what do I do with the containers of poop over the next couple of days? My sis is a nurse and said put them in the freezer, but would that mess up the contents for the analysis? What were you guys told to do? I tried to Google...but am coming up empty!
Thanks!!

I know that you have to keep the sample cool, some say put in the fridge but I cringe when I think about anything that contains feces is being put in there! One way of doing it is putting the container in a plastic bag and then putting it on ice inside another larger container..that's what I did. I put the sample outside during the collection and changed the ice periodically. It kept the sample cool enough and the lab had no problem with the way I kept it cool. I'd recommend that you call the lab where you'll be dropping off the sample. I work in a clinical laboratory and checked the website for our reference lab that performs this test. Their website says the stool samples are only for stable for 36 hours refrigerated and one week frozen. Here's the link: http://www.aruplab.com/guides/ug/tests/0060772.jsp It probably varies between labs though so I'd check with whoever will be performing it.

Definetly call your lab. At our lab, patients must refrigerate samples for fecal fat if they can't bring the sample back within an hour. When we give out 3 day long samples, we have paitents bring back the sample each day that it is most accurate. Call your lab to make sure you do the right action; you don't want to repeat the test again because of that kind of error.
