Fecal Fat Test

Avery's BMI % has been dropping in the last 6 months, so the CF clinic had me collect her poop for 4 days and at the same time keep a food diary. I turned the poop and diary in to the clinic and they did the calculations.

They tested the poop for the fat amount it contained and compared it to the amount of fat she ate those 4 days.

The outcome was not great. She is only absorbing 88% of fat she eats. The normal CFer absorbs 95% of fat they eat (this is what clinic told me).

Have any of you or your CFers had this test? What were your results? What did you do to fix the problem?

Briceton's has had 3 collections, the last was a 42! He does not absorb his food very well at all, but does fair in the weight area (loses and gains in ounces-slowly but atleast he does gain here and there.)Unfourtunetly, we can't seem to get the problem under control for him. He is under going more invassive testing (colonoscopy, upper GI, etc..) as we are looking for other issues that could be the cause. Briceton has 5-10 BM's daily. Out of curiousity, have they checked her inflammation markers? Briceton's markers are always in high 100's, this being the reason for alarm with other issues, like Chrons.

I am not sure what inflammation markers are....what type of test would they be found in?

We have a follow up CF clinic visit in two weeks I am assuming we will talk more in depth about our next step to fix the problem then.

This might be a stupid question, but I've learned to not assume anything. Did they send a stool sample out for a fecal elastase test? Another thing to consider is a gastric emptying study.
