Fertility Appointment

Hi everyone,

I went to the fertility doctor yesterday for a consultation for IUI. I told the doctor about my health history and that I wanted to get pregnant. He says, "Oh wow. I am so pleased to see the progress they have made with cystic fibrosis. I am so excited about participating in your goal to get pregnant. That is just amazing that you are able to do this. I mean, you're quite tall [btw, I'm 5'8"] and obviously you have done very well healthwise." He said he wants me to make sure everything is okay to get pregnant with my CF doctor.

I had an internal ultrasound done and everything looked perfectly normal (although the doctor made a comment on the "very thick" cervical mucus - hehe). At least with IUI we won't have to worry about that getting in the way.

Because of my meconium ileus surgery at birth, he wants me to undergo an HSG to make sure both tubes are patent. I've decided that tI will only do that if I don't get pregnant after 3 tries of IUI. He also wanted me to go on Clomid, but my CF doctor told me he doesn't want his CF patients using any fertility drugs (I don't know the reasoning for that - multiples, maybe?). I told him I did not want to do that either.

I have the regular pre-pregnancy lab work to be done next cycle. Then I will hopefully going in for the first IUI attempt in mid-October when I'm expected to ovulate. I will use OPK to find the ovulation day.

I go to my CF clinic appointment next week, so I have to make sure that my health is stable and my PFT's are still good before I go ahead. I don't want to go into this process without being at my best. If PFT's are down, I will probably wait a couple months. Although, the fall seems to be my worst season (allergies, sinuses, etc), so a little dip is expected.

I am SOOOOO excited. I hope everything works out as planned and I am able to get pregnant fairly easily.

Thanks for listening!

Leah - great news. I agree with the no clomid thing if you're ovulating regularly. have you started to chart your cycles? I chart and use OPK. OPK will tell you the LH surge but it can't confirm ovulation. By charting you can confirm O and also make sure your luteal phase is long enough. You need at least 10 days to get pregnant but 10 is on the short side since the average age of implantation is 10 days. I took progesterone after ovulating this last cycle due to a very short luteal phase (about 8 days) that is a result of still nursing my son. If I got a negative pg test at 14 days post O I would have stopped the progesterone and let my period come and then started again after O. The last thing you want when paying for fertility treatment is for it to go south due to a problem that you can identify and correct.

I hope everything goes great for you! Good luck! How old is your son now? I can't remember.

If your insurance will pay for it, I would go ahead and have the HSG done. I had it done, and my nurse said that sometimes women get pregant right after it who had not conceived before it, even if it came back showing no problems, because their tubes are so clean afterwards. Might as well start out with a clear set of tubes, and not throw your money away on IUI's if there is something that needs fixed (or, at the least, if there is a problem on one side but not the other, you will want to do the IUI on the month that the good side shows the best chance). I also had meconium illius surgery (and 3 other surgeries, same scar), and mine were clear.

Keepercjr - My son is 7 months right now. Yeah, not much need for Clomid I don't think. I have been tracking my cycles on fertilityfriend.com and it seems that I ovulate every month. I told the doctor that. My luteal phase is long enough because I have very long cycles. BTW, congratulations on your recent pregnancy!!!

AnD - I don't think my insurance will pay for the HSG, so that's another reason why I don't want to do it unless I need to. I heard it's a pretty uncomfortable procedure, is it? If I end up having difficulty with the IUI, then I will go through with it though. It's good to know you had no problems with your tubes after bowel surgery <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Thanks!
