FEV1 Boosters

Hey, everybody! For those who don't know, here's a little background on me related to my queston;

My FEV1 is in the 40's as of last month. I've been completely, totally compliant with every med for 6 months now. I'm probably eating healthier than I ever have. And still, I feel like my lung function is crap and I'm sicker than ever. I had an FEV1 of 75% three years ago. I just don't understand the drop and frequent infections. I've been getting a staph flare-up every 30 days or so for the past 7 months, but I'm not MRSA and I don't have cepacia. The only three things I've ever cultured are staph and psudo, and something called alcoligenese (sp, I have no idea how to spell that stupid bug). I'm told it's benign, however.

Alright, I have a question for everyone; what special things do you to boost your FEV1? I already know about exercising, probiotics and the anti-inflamatory diet. I plan to try all of these things, but I'd really like to hear any other ideas anyone might have, i.e. herbal remedies, etc. Anything you do that you feel has contributed to higher lung function, I'd love to hear it. Also, what do your exercise routines consist of? I'm beginning to think going up and down a flight of stairs every day isn't quite enough. I do have a pool and a treadmill at my parent's house, I'm just not sure what exercises would be most beneficial.

I have a PFT appointment in the morning, so I'll see where my numbers are now, but I'm pretty sure they haven't changed in my favor...

Thanks in advance!

Exercise seems to be the main thing that will get kj's pft's up.

She exercises 3 times a day when she is in hospital. Bike, treadmill, stairs, aerobics. The more exercise the better!!!

At home she does her exercise after school as it is too hard in the morning. She does the exercise bike, elyptical and taibo (just bought the video for that) it's a really great workout!!!

I hope you can get your lung function back up soon <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I also have my daughter on vitamin c and garlic tablets.

(not sure if this helps with lung function though lol)

Hey, Lilith!

One thing I find usefull in general about increasing PFT's would be to have good breathing control.
Swimming would seem beneficial for both getting the proper breathing to synchronize with the swimming strokes, and the entire body gets good excercise from swimming, because just about every muscle is being used.
I think walking, or a treadmill (at a slight incline) would increase breathing endurance, but I don't even think there is much "muscle toning", as compared to jogging or running.
Garlic tablets (or straight garlic) will boost endurance, and won't hurt to add to your supplemental diet. Taurin is also a helpful energy booster, found in energy drinks like "Red Bull" (look up "Taurin" in the wikipedia!)
About a year ago, my FEV1 were down to about 85%, but went up again when I returned to my Iaido. Iaido is basically a style which needs lots of controlled breathing, probably in good comparison to yoga, escept yoga doesn't synchronize a sword cut with breathing!
After a few months in Iaido, I had my FEV1 tested again, and it was about 95%!
However, since last December, I've been fighting an infection, as well as adjusting to a new job, so my FEV1 had dropped to about 87%. I went back at the end of April, and am actually looking forward to finding out if my FEV1 really has anything to do with the Iaido practice.
Anyway, the most helpful suggestion I can give is to find some sort of activity you ENJOY doing, so that you'd be looking forward to going back to do it again. Do you have the opportunity to go hiking, like on mountains or such? bringing a camera may increase the fun!

Good luck, girl!

i know what ya kinda going through i had a drop of 10% in like a year and it really pisses ya off the thing that helps me feel good is swimming especially front crawl as it works all ya body as opposed to a stroke like breatstroke which is less intense and more easy to do

Alright, so exercise, exercise, and more exercise...

Mum2kj, I will certainly try the treadmill. May I ask how long your daughter usually runs for? Is 30 minutes good?

Fred, I may try the garlic tablets and the taurin. I'm thinking heavily about starting yoga as well. Rick has a katana...maybe I can make my own version of Iaido! LOL! As for hiking, I'm in FL, so the highest point in the whole state is probably the ant hill in my back yard. But taking walks with the BF may not be a bad alternative...

Ricky123, I will try to get some swimming in as well. Thanks for the tip!

I'm off to see the doc, so we'll see where my numbers stand...wish me luck!

Hi Lisa

My FEV's vary from 39 - 41%...
I have found exercise to be the key to keeping my lungs stronger. I personally prefer jogging OUTSIDE and at first you may need to walk/jog/ I would also time yourself so you can start setting goals for your self. As you get better and use to the jogging increase your speed.

I also use probiotics and prefer Bio K-plus and you can find out more info about it at www.biokplus.com

Hope this helps and remember to EXERCISE outside and cough up the junk.
