fevers - who gets 'em

hey guys!

There were a few threads about people with NTM in their cultures and I know the repliers mentioned fevers accompanying that. I am the same way. I get feverish quite a bit since culturing M. absessus. First of all, do any of you who DON'T culture NTM get fevers with infections? My cf doc always comments on how uncommon it is for a cfer to have a fever with a lung infection. That baffles me. Why WOULDN'T it be likely to have a fever with a lung infection?

Also...

What temperature do you guys hit when you have a fever? My normal body temp seems to be a little on the low side (always has) which makes a temperature of 99*F feel crappy to me. A lot of people tell me I'm not running a fever when my temp hits this number. This is still considered a normal body temp...but let me tell you, I SWEAR I have a fever at this number, or at least the start of one. I'm chilly, exhausted, and sometimes SOB. Do any of you have fevers at low temperatures? It gets annoying when I'm shivering in a boiling room and am told I'm fine, and don't have a fever, because my temp is only 99.5*F.

I rarely will get a fever, whether it be a lung infection or another illness. I also run a low temp, usually around 97.5, so I feel crappy when I get to 99 or over as well. The highest fever I remember getting in the last few years was 101, and I was almost delirious. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> Anyways, I would just try to explain to people that even though you have a "low-grade fever", that you normally run low and that you are still sick!

If I let myself get really crappy before getting started on ivs I get fevers and they've gone as high as 103F. I wasn't aware this was uncommon, my docs ask at every appt if I've had any fevers.

Hey erin, how long have you cultured M.A.? I never knew you were 'one of us' haha.

I think I remember a thread not too long ago talking about body aches, and I swear I agreed with you about have low grade fevers but feeling like they are really high...

But I feel normally I am a little low too (97, low 98), and I am the EXACT same way, I can be 98.9 sometimes and feel horrible. The chills, the SOB, exhuastion etc.

I barely will go into 100's at my highest (I am bad, b/c I hardly ever take my temp anymore... I just know when I have a fever, even those ones that are 99). I have told my doctors they are low grade, but I really feel them. They believe me so thats nice. I think they get annoyed when I dont take my temp, its just I can tell pretty instantly and so I just get up and take ibuprofen. I feel it in my eyes, and the first sign is those chills forming.

I have started associating fevers with NTM, mainly b/c I havent heard of the others really causing fevers, like you said, and it seemed to be a common thread for someone with some form of NTM.

Although, sometimes I do think I get fevers from b. cepacia now, but I just associate it with my lungs being so crappy that what else can my body do haha. Then again, who really knows what is causing the fevers b/c you have too many bugs to know?

Good question (and it makes me feel awesome that I am not weird for feeling so horrible when my temp is only 99.5, not that most people dont believe me, but it just doesnt seem like it would be that 'painful' but they are, even at that low)

Yeah, I've cultured M.a. for the last few years. I was first cultured with it in 2008. I was SUPER SICK with it then. I also have cultured MAC, but I don't think it's a regular for me. I'm on IVs now to try to get rid of the M.a. (tigecycline, cefoxitin, avelox, clarithromycin) and have been since early october. I'm getting over what I think is a minor headcold and am just shivering and sleepy...all day, every day. theLostMiler, when you say you can feel the fever in your eyes, I know EXACTLY what you're talking about! I, too, rarely take my temp anymore b/c I can just feel when it's time to grab the ibuprofen. I'll check every once in a while though, to see if it's anywhere passed 99 like it often feels it is.

Weird, lol.

I'm surprised that not many of you that don't culture NTM have fevers. I mean, it's an infection in quite a vital part of the body, I'm surprised a fever isn't a more common way of the body trying to dismantle it.

Ifevers - who gets 'em

I have Pseudomonas..and if if I am running low on sleep and pushing myself too fast, I get downhill quick and I get fevers. I run a low body temp too, so a temp of 100.3 can leave me feeling drowsy and out of it, I took a four hour nap today!

The fevers I have had the past 2 days aren't contagious, it's just my body reacting to high levels of stress. I'm doing my TOBI and prednisone to help with the inflammation in my right lung.

My dd, who is 3 y/o gets fever when she catches PA. It happened 2 times, she had no symptoms, no cough, so I took her to the ped who diagnosed "isolated fever"... only to find out on the next culture that she grew PA. So from now on if she gets fever I take her for a culture.

as to the temperature, the first time she had 39C (not sure in Farenheit), this time 38C)
