First Dental Appointment

Have noticed for a long time that DS's teeth have been discolored in a few spots. Probably from the antibiotics he's been off and on. We do brush his teeth twice a day and then hand the brush to him, so he gets used to knowing how to brush his teeth -- usually he brushes his teeth for a few seconds and then moves on to other body parts -- but I digress. Since we've been making a concerted effort to brush his teeth on a regular basis, I've noticed the stains are fading.

He'll be three in June, so we've made arrangements for him to go along with us when we go to our next dental appointments. They'll show him what they do to us, see if he wants to ride in the chair, get his teeth looked at, polished... Hopefuly he'll do fine. He just sat thru a haircut last night with clippers and shears and didn't have a problem with it.

Any suggestions. What age did you or your children start going to the dentist? Any tips?

My daughter went with me for the first time last month. We were trying to get her used to it before she goes for her own appointment. Just make sure they hide any blood from the child. Because my daughter kept saying after my appointment that mommy had boo boos in her mouth. So I am afraid when she goes for her first appointment that she will remmeber seeing the blood from mine.

Good Luck!

My 5 year old with CF had to have 2 teeth removed and one capped when he was almost 4. The reason I am telling you this is because he brushes his teeth 2 times a day, but he drinks 3 to 4 cans of Pediasure a day. They tell me that after drinking the pediasure he needs to rinse with water. Pediasure is very high in sugar is what they are telling me. So if your little one drinks Pediasure make sure they rinse after.

I'm hoping he'll have good teeth like his parents. The discoloration concerns me a little bit, but I have mentioned it during clinic appointments and nobody has indicated that it's anything other than staining from antibiotics. Some of his medications -- actigall for one is in suspension form, so pretty much sugar and cherry flavoring and he does get carnation instant breakfast for breakfast and with his dinner.

Are there any issues with CFers and dental work? When I had my wisdom teeth pulled they used novacaine, but where I live now, they tend to put people under instead.
