How do you use a flutter thing? I have one but I don't think I've ever used it and so I decided I might give it a try. I have just been blowing into it, but it doesn't seem like it's doing anything. I can get far more mucous out with a set of 100 jumping jacks. Am I using it wrong or is it just ineffective?

I have had mine for a few months, but havent had the patience for it. Your head position is what makes it work. I have followed the directions, but for most its trial & error until you feel the sensation. I cant help you more then that because I am in the same boat as you.

it took a while for me to get the hang of it myself. You have to hold it so the line( flat part you hold onto ) is somewhat parallel to the floor. It has to sit straight almost like you were smoking pipe. Blow into it till you can hear a fluttering type of noise, and start to feel a fluttering sensation in your chest as you blow into it. Make sure you are sitting up straight. Once you actually feel the fluttering in your chest, you can start trying to alter positioning of the flutter so you get the best results out of it. It takes a bit of concentration , but once you get the hang of it, it will seem so easy. The first time i actually felt the flutter working i felt it in my throat more than in my lungs. Thats when i started to realize what the sensation should feel like in my chest. Also make sure to hold your cheeks in so the fluttering doesnt happen in your cheeks instead of down in your chest. Im going to look for the instructions , i think i still have them and ill post what it said to do............... Gosh i hope this helped more than confused you

Hi,

do you know "autogene Drainage", a special breathing-technique ? It helps to use the flutter with it. You take a deep breath, hold the air for a short moment and breathe it out through the flutter, not too strong. It depends on how much mucus you have in your lungs, but normally it lasts about five minutes, until you notice the mucus coming up through your lungs. The ball inside the flutter slows down the airflow, when your breath comes out and so the mucus can come slowly up with the air.
You can also use the flutter while inhaling something. Inhale something and breathe out through the flutter.

I tried the flutter years ago and hated it. It did nothing for me at all. I just do my inhaled stuff and use the vest. I think the vest works great.

The flutter didn't do anything for me, either. Actually, neither did the vest. I'm using the Acapella now. It's somewhat of an updated version of the flutter, but it works much better and is better for you due to a resistance setting that you can use to build up the strength of your lungs. I found that I was getting up a lot more mucus with this device, and I've been using it for about 2 years now. I suggest asking your doctor or CPT about it if the flutter isn't working for you.

I have both of these and I dont use either one. They both work fine once you get the hang of them. But, if you do or can get up the energy, I suggest cardio or running five or six days a week. I dont exercise that often (maybe 2-4 times week) but if I did I'd I bet a million I would be more healthy.

ccflewallen- I was a swimmer from ages 9-18, my parents put me in it bcasue I refused to do any treatments. The cardio cleaned my lungs right out. And I think helped ward off infections for so long. Also, I did aerobics in college. I have since fallen wayside with my atheletics though, which is why i dug out the old flutter. So far, I think it stinks. I decided to start doing jumping jacks every morning instead. I can't leave to go run as I have a sleeping 5 year old at home. The jacks work like a charm. I hack for a coupla minutes and then clean as a whistle (until the next morning!). Keep running!

I use the Flutter. It is a learning process when you first get it. When I was last in the hospital, my PT wanted to watch me do the Flutter and make sure it was effective. Even though I felt the 'fluttering' sensation and always expectorated a ton with the FLutter (which I had used for awhile at the time), I liked having a 'professional' observe me and make sure I was getting the most out of the Flutter. Among other things, she placed her hands on my torso and felt the vibrations as I fluttered. She said it was working great for me!

I also wasn't so into the Flutter, I much prefer using Therapep -- it has resistance for you to blow against, and is soooo much easier to get right because there's a thing that moves as you blow and you just have to blow the right pressure to get it in the target area. They gave me one at clinic (yay for free toys! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> ), maybe you can ask them?

Also does anyone know how this Acapella thing compares against the Therapep? Better/worse/the same?

Hmm...never heard of Therapep, but it sounds almost indentical to the Acapella... Is it sort of egg-shaped with a mouthpiece? The resistance setting is on the back of the Acapella...is it the same for the Therapep?

I love my Acapella Choice and my Therapep. Much better than the FLutter.

The difference between the acapella and therapep is the therapep doesn't cause the vibrations like the Acapella. It just does positive expiration therapy. I have both the Therapep and Pari PEP, they do the same thing just look a little different. The acapella does better for me than the flutter and the acapella is not positional...you can do it in any position
