Flying w the vest

So I understand from other posts that the vest does not count as a carry on, I can have it in addition to the carry on bag and personal item. Do I need to do anything special in advance to let the airline know I will have this extra item? It's my first time flying with the vest and I'm just worrying myself with possible problems that could come up - airline people insisting I can't carry on, no room on the plane, bag too big for overhead compartment, etc, etc.

Any advice from experienced vest travelers?

Thanks!

- take the machine out of the bag at security and put it in its own bin.
- once at the gate go up to the desk and request preboarding to assure that there is room in the overhead for your medical equipment that WILL NOT be used on board.

Have a letter on hand from your doctor that says you need to carry the vest ON BOARD. It is vital to your survival and cannot be checked.

Are you flying alone or with someone? If you are flying with someone, they can help you carry the equipment and the pre-board makes things easier.

If you are flying ALONE, when you get to the ticket counter to check your bags, you can request a special escort pass which means that a friend or family member CAN GO THROUGH SECURITY AND WALK YOU TO YOUR GATE helping you carry your equipment even if they are not flying.
This proved VERY helpful to me when I was flying alone in october.

Also, be sure you tell them its medical equipment and it CANNOT count towards your luggage and YOU CANNOT BE CHARGED EXTRA.
see dept of transportation website if you need to verify...

We just flew with DS' vest, nebs and medication and quite frankly the carry ons other people had were much, much larger than anything we had. DH indicated we had medical equipment at the security checkpoint unzipped the vest case, pulled out the pari compressor. The worse airport was our small local one -- they had to test the compressor, vest and DS' light up shoes, but it only took a couple extra minutes.

We did have a very, very small plane on the connecting flight home -- was a CJ something or other -- 30 seater, maybe -- we were in the back row which was row 13 to tell you how small the plane was and we found the vest fit under the seat in front of DS and DH. Otherwise we have never ever had issues with it fitting in an overhead bin.

Be prepared to get pulled aside and possibly swabbed. Our vest was swabbed each flight - out of Baltimore, Orlando, and St. Louis. I had a letter from our doctor and we had the vest in it's own bag. Also your meds do not count as carry on - we had one bag for the vest and one bag with our small neb and all the meds including a fridge pack for the pulmozyme plus each of us had our own carry on for the flight. So in total we had 7 bags but two were medical.

(We thought the swabbing thing was hilarious due to being Jeff Dunham fans!)

I usually take a letter from my dr. with all meds/equipment listed.

when going through security, it seems the nebulizer compressor is more of a problem. They want you to take the neb compressor out of the carry case..

I always take any med equipment onboard with me. I usually have extra meds/nebs in my clothing carry on so that is considered a med bag as well Hope they dont give you a hard time.

Take care joni
