Flying with O2

Hi,

I have been flying long distances (more than 10 hours) for many years and never had any problems during or after the flight. However, in my last flight, which was only a 3 hours, I measured my O2 for the 1st time - with an oximeter - and was shocked - my O2 levels dropped to the 70%s!

Is it possible to be that low on O2 and not feel any negative effects?

I have in the meantime sent an email to my doctor asking him for a test to confirm the numbers and my need for inflight O2 and he responded that there´s no need for a test and that I should go ahead and start using O2 during flights.

My next long flight will be in November and I´ll be flying from Europe to Arizona with an American Airline (not sure which one because I haven´t booked it yet), so I´m wondering how I should go about it. Should I just buy a portable O2 concentrator and not have to worry about renting one, since I fly a lot? Do some airlines provide their own O2 and which ones?

Any help that you can provide me with will be much appreciated! I find this such a difficult issue because not only do I have to start coming to terms with the idea of using O2 in public for the first time, but I also understand that it can be a real hassle to request O2 for flights.

Thanks.

I can't help you very much because I've never traveled to a different country. But, I have flown with Oxygen before with in the United States (Ohio to Florida) I was too young to remember all of the details but I do remember that the airline (Delta Airlines) did not allow me to use my own 02 Concentrator. I had to use the one they provided for me.

I hope someone else can give you more info about this.
