Folate -- Journal of CF

In this month's issue of the Journal of CF, a case
report from Italy is included. A mother had a baby
with CF. The doctor thought to ask the mother to
supplement with folic acid (5-methyltetrahydro folate)
to see if that would increase the baby's level of DHA
(the baby was breastfeeding) . Not only did the DHA in
plasma and RBCs normalize, but exceeded levels in a
healthy control baby. The child is 6 years old now
and receives 30 mg per week, as well as vitamin B-12.
Interestingly, the child does not need enzymes and has
been free from clinical or radiological lung disease,
with normal growth. The child's genotype is
deltaI507/4382delA.
