Hi all!

My niece, Klaudia, was diagnosed with CF about 6 weeks ago. Tests have shown that so far she doesn't have any health problems. The only time she had fever was about 2 weeks ago from a throat irritation (reddish throat). Now she's doing fine, thoguh she doesn't really have a good appetite and is not gaining weight very well (she does look healthy though).

We had her checked in Hungary, I live in Albania, as we don't really trust our doctors.

These are the minerals she's lacking:

value normal value

Natrium 131 135-145

Kalium 2.4 3.5-5

Chlorium 70 95 - 110

The doctor said we should supplement kalium with bananas but Klaudia doesn't really like bananas (she throws them up). I'm trying to contact the doctor by email but he hasn't replied yet (almost a week now ).

What can kalium and the other substances, mentioned above, be supplemented with?

Thanks a lot for the help!

Kalium.../potassium/ can be found in lots of stuff besides bananas. Try carrots or even carrot juice has a lot of potassium in it. Try this link, it has a list of potassium levels for different foods.
http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/food/potassium-foods.htm

Just copy and paste it if it doesn't work here. As for the other two I'm not sure why the doc said to supplement them unless I'm thinking of a different mineral.

You can add Natrium and Chlorium from shrimp, other sea foods and sea grasses. Unfortunately, these foods are quite low in calories, so be sure to prepare them with some olive oil, canola oil. Be sure to add salt to food. Salted, buttered popcorn is a tasty way to get those minerals along with some fats.

Other sources of natrium include:

some cereals
cheeses
sauerkraut
broth
tofu

Sources of Kalium:

Nuts and seeds (also high in vitamin E, protein, and some fiber)

Salt can also be added in small amounts to a glass of water. This is especially important during periods of extreme heat or vigorous exercise. Do you have things like Vitawater, Propel, or Powerade available where you live? Those may be quite sugary, but they have electrolytes that are beneficial when salt is lost through sweating.

People with CF should be sure to consume plenty of the following foods:

-Fish, poultry, eggs, and other high protein foods to promote growth
-Starchy foods (pasta, whole grains) for energy
-Fluids to prevent constipation and bowel obstruction
-As much fat as can be tolerated

I hope that helps!

Thanks a lot for the replies. Sorry I forgot to mention Klaudia's age, she's just over 6 months old. She's having a lot of trouble to gain weight, still hovering around 5.5 kgs. But she doesn't eat at all. She's very picky about food, and my sister, Klaudia's mother, has yet to find a food Klaudia will properly eat.

Thanks again for your help!
