FOOD Vs Treatment

Hey everyone

I was curious about what other people do on here about the food situation when it's time to do vest and breathe Hypertonic Saline. I have to wait like two to three SOMETIMES FOUR hours after I eat before I can do my treatment. If I don't, I'll PUKE.

Anyone else have this issue?

It seems like when I was little, and my mom did my treatments, I'd wait about an hour after I ate and I very rarely got sick because my food in my tummy hadn't settled.

Now days, with the vest shaking me around and with HS - I cough so HARD and so much, that if I eat anything before hand, it's coming back up.

What makes this frustrating, is that it's hard to do a treatment when you're hungry. Don't you agree? I work full time, and devote a couple of hours + a day to my treatments and walking. So when I get home from work, I try to do my treatment and go walking before I eat ... Or I'm up late doing treatments. Well, one evenining, I did a long treatment and did a good long walk, and I didn't end up eating until like 9pm. I was STARVING!

Any advice ? What do other people do? I've tried eating at work at 3 pm or something so I'm not so hungry when I get home, but sometimes I am still really hungry. Any advice is appreciated!

One of the ways I keep from getting to that point where I feel like my stomach is eating itself is to snack OFTEN throughout the day. I tend to get hypoglycemic, so I'm always munching on something light. Usually it's pretzels or yogurt.

Here are a few suggestions for you based on what you've written in your post:

1. Keep some snacks in your desk, and drink plenty of water during the day. Water helps keep you feeling fuller.

2. I've read that when it comes to exercising, you should eat proteins before and carbs after. So try having something quick like a cup of yogurt before your workout, Gatorade during your walk, and a sandwich or banana after.

3. Eat lots of small meals. I bring a sack lunch to work almost every day, and I eat almost exactly the same thing every day because I know what it takes to keep my BMs on track. I make a lot of my meals ahead of time. On Mondays (my day off) I try to put together some pre-fab lunches and snacks so that I don't have to waste time making them each day.

4. If you're coughing so hard you're puking, something's not right. Your vest might be too tight and pressing against your diaphragm and stomach. Try going down to a lower concentration of HS or using a lower pressure on the vest. Things should be coming up your trachea, not your esophagus! Are you using the right coughing technique?

I hope these help a little bit!

I'd like to second what LinghtNLife said. If you are getting that sick from coughing from the vest something is off. I can do my vest right after I eat a decent meal. Not Thanksgiving but normal dinner. I also have to eat smaller meals during the day because I tend to get very SOB with alot off food in my tummy. And I snack constantly so I don't get real hungry. I get very shaky and light headed when I get hungry and I feel like I a going to pass out. So I make sure I have tons of snacks at work. People look at me funny when I am eating almost every 45-60 minutes but whatever!!

I would definitely try snacking throughout the day so that maybe when you get home you can get through your treatments without your stomach caving in.
