For those who have had problems with Pulmozyme and hemoptysis

I have a few questions for those who have stopped using Pulmozyme because of hemoptysis.

Other than hypertonic saline did you try anything else? Like maybe Mucinex?

If you did replace it with Mucinex , did it help?

Does anyone have any published reports about Pulmozyme causing hemoptysis?

The reason i am asking is because of my recent problems with hemoptysis. I stopped using the Pulmozyme .
I stopped using it because i dont have a lot of mucus, never really do unless i am sick, but since being on iv antibiotics i am producing less. So it started to make sense that the Pulmozyme might be the culprit in my recent hemoptysis problems. Its kind of odd that i would start coughing up blood a week and a half into my iv course, unless the Pulmozyme is causing the problem. I want to call my Dr. on Monday and tell her about this but it would be great if i had some reports to show her to back up my thoughts on this. My iv nurse suggested maybe Mucinex would be of help if i wasnt using Pulmozyme, but i have never taken Mucinex before so i wondered if anyone did in place of Pulmozyme.

Diane,

I tried alot of stuff besides Pulmozyme, but they just didn't work as well for me.

I would recommend taking a several week break from it just to let your lungs heal, and then ease back into it at a very low dose.

I used to take it twice a day. Now I am doing it 2-3 times a week with the same benefits and I haven't had any bleeding again.

I know that Pulmozyme can cause bleeds, but for me, it seems like it was always a combination of things. For example, the last one, I noticed that I'd been taking a lot of aspirin. I had a picc line at the time, and I was taking a bunch of pain reliever, esp aspirin.. I started breathing some Pulmozyme one night, and I started coughing up blood. I know that for a lot of folks, pulmozyme is the main culprit, but sometimes I think it may be several things combined, like maybe taking a bunch of Vit C , garlic, fish oil, etc, that causes blood thinning.

I personally don't notice a huge difference ON pulmozyme.. but if I miss a dose, I notice.

Good luck!

Diane, I was just asking my doc about Pulmozyme and doing 2x/day. We decided against that. I don't know how true this is because I have not seen any research in this area; however, he has been a CF doc for over 3 decades. He said they are doing research to see if HS is just as effective as Pulmozyme in mucous clearance and preliminary research is proving that point. Just a point of interest since you may be laying off of it for a while.
