For those with CF that run

Hi!

I'm just curious how long other CFers who run (outside OR on a treadmill) are able to run constant without stopping to walk? I guess I push myself more when I see others able to do better than me and I know it can be done. So, right now I run on a treadmill at about 5.3 and can run about 16 minutes without having to stop. I am slowly getting my run longer since I started running at 9 minutes constant a couple years ago. Just wondering how I compare to other runners with CF?

(I also do running where I do run a short while and then walk, run, walk, etc (and this is a GREAT workout too)... but I guess I'm wondering this since I feel I'm pushing myself to my limit when I run constant.)

Thanks for anyone who wants to share. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

p.s. I didn't post this in exercise since it seems that isn't read very often. Sorry.

Ladybug and Chaggie,

You are both great inspirations for all of us, with or without CF.

First of all, great job Ladybug on running at 5.3 mph for 16 minutes. Super job....

That's a fantastic run, you much feel so good afterwards.

I myself loeth running, but when I did it at the gym a year ago. I was able to do a mile in 9 minutes. It took a couple of months to get to that kind of mile. I only ran one mile after lifting weights. However, I do play hockey 3 to 4 times a week and that keeps me in pretty good shape.

As far as you go, Chaggie. A 45 minute run is in my mind a miracle. I would have to run for years to get back into that kind of shape. All I have to say is, You're a STUD........ And it's great to have you as a friend and inspiration.

Both of you keep it up and Have a Happy New Year,
God Bless Both of You,

GREAT JOB!!! Running or jogging is great therapy. Before my transplant days, I believe that jogging kept me in the best shape. I lived down in Florida and would jog on the college campus four times during the week. I remember doing my therapy first and working out until I felt the sweat dripping. I should get back into jogging again. I love to do treadmill, fast walks and eliptical and trampoline. I guess there is no excuse for me anymore.

Hi Sonia,

Congrats on the running, it sounds like a great job. Exercise toleration varies wildly among CFers, and you seem enthusiastic about pushing your own limits - good for you!

In high school and college I ran on the cross-country and track team. During college, I ran on average, 70 miles a week. My typical training pace for a normal ten mile run was 7 minute miles. My race pace for a 15k (9.3 miles) was under 6 minutes per mile. My five mile personal best was 28:05. My best mile time was 4 minutes 34 seconds (at age 20 - I'm now 26).

Today, I still exercise, but no where near that volume or pace. Last summer I was biking 150 miles a week (I commute to work, and ride with a club) and running three times a week. My runs are typically 45 minutes long at about 8-9 minute mile pace.

Hey there! When I first started about 4 months ago I had to do the run a few blocks then walk a few. Now I am able to run at least 45 minutes..if I run slower I can run longer and if I run faster I get tired quicker..always outside unless the weather is horrible.

For my 10K I ran about a 9.5 minute mile. I was very happy with that and actually increased my 5K split by 16 minutes.

Now my lungs aren't at their best so I am running a little bit slower, but I am still doing it..2 miles today!

Keep up the running everybody.

Thanks, everyone! Since everyone is sharing how long it takes them to do a mile, I figure I'd share... I'm at an 11 minute mile.

Since my inquiry was how long you can run constant without a break... for those who run 45 minutes (AMAZING BTW!!!!), do you run that without stopping for even a minute to walk? Do you run that straight through? If so, I am completely floored! Its amazing anyone can run that (CF or not!) YAY!

And to others who run (or do any cardio) with CF (and it appears everyone who has replied runs longer and faster than I), I want to tell you GREAT job!!! I also LOVE the feeling I get when I run/jog. Its amazing. I know many with CF don't have the lung capacity at this point to do it, but I also give them kudos for doing what they can do.... I think it is the best thing we can do for ourselves (I personallly think its even better than my vest, but that's just me)... I credit running with keeping me at my baseline for years now!

Anyway, anyone else care to offer how long (in minutes) they can run straight without stopping to catch their breath? I'm totally inspired by the responses I've gotten already!

Thanks everyone! Happy New Year to ya'll too!!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
