Forgetful flushes

I have had a sick feeling in my stomach today while waiting to get Kj's port flushed.

Kj was in hospital 2 months ago, but we forgot to write her last flush down on the calender, well when I found her discharge papers and saw that date I nearly had a fit as it had been 2 months since her last flush. I don't know how I forgot, the days just seemed to run together lately and I couldn't even tell you what day it was to day (I'm losing my mind I think)

So with dread we go up to the hospital and tell them how long it had been, the nurse didn't even seem worried. She put the needle in and blood was drawn back with ease. A succesful flush yahhhhhhh so much for all of my fretting

I suppose my question is have you ever forgot a flush before and how long had you gone between them?

Also are they just telling us to flush every month so as if we go a bit over the month it won't matter?

I don't know if I'm making much sense lol

I dont have a port so I am not very knowledgable & am basing things only on what I have read from everyone. It would seem that this is the normal protocal, but like everything else it can vary. Some people have different problems even with regular flushing. You might or might not have lucked out this time. I personally wouldnt risk it based on this one time. ON THAT NOTE I am very glad that it worked out ok.....HUGS~

Thank Melissa

I had visions of Kj having to get a new port in and it would have been my fault. I was so disgusted with myself!!

I have never been so glad to see blood in my life lol. Her port is 6 years old and thankfully it is the first time that this has happened.

I didn't really put this on here so as to find out if I could leave it longer between flushes as I don't think my nerves could take it!!

It is now marked clearly on our calender and we will be going back in a months time!!

I was just wondering if it had happened to other people?

When Garran got his Port they gave us this long speech and extensive paperwork about how his Port could get a clot and that it needed to get flushed regularly etc....that was my biggest fear.

My question was, if there was a clot, would every month be enough? But apparently it is.

We have actually gone about a month and a half and he has been fine, we didnt even realize it was so late. The home health services place said that they had scheduled that time in.

He has a home health nurse come out each month to access it and flush it, but she is going to show me how and I am going to start accessing it and flushing it each month and they will just come out when it is time for IV antibiotics. which is every 2 months.

That way if something does happen and he starts to show some of the signs on the paper work they gave us we have all the stuff we need here to help him till we can get to the hospital. Or if he has an allergic reaction etc... blah blah blah...Anyway. It might do you good to learn to access it?

That could just be me, talking out my butt again, I am good at that

Good luck!
