Fundoplication/Nissen - is it worth it?

Claire's nissen has come undone after 10 years and the doctors want to re-do the fundoplication surgery. The last one she had done when she was 2 years old and for some reason it is no longer in place. She's had the hardest year of her life and they think the severe reflux could be causing the recurring upper airway infections. I was just advised by the surgeon that this is a very painful recovery and that they can't really function for at least a week..no vest, no coughing, no lifting anything and the incision is quite large if they can't do it laproscopically. Any input? Is it worth it? Any experience? Thanks so much!

Hi Melissa,

First I want to say its great Clars Fundo lasted that long. My daughter Maryam is 9 and has had 4 of them. Each one having failed. First one at 3yrs,second at 5 yrs,3rd at 6 and 4th at 7. She has had major GI issues and her 4th one has been undone for the past year and a half. Bad thing is there is not a surgeon who will touch her at this point its to risky for her. The only other option is to do a complete stomach bypass which is not something we would consider. Or just deal. Her first Fundos were done laporscopacly and the last 3 were open with an incession from the belly button to mid chest.recovery is Hard. With each fundo the chance of it slipping increases so for 2nd fundos sucess is less then first. Maryam had Titaniam mesh put in with her last 3 and also had a Pyloryplasty to open up the pyloris to help with gastric emptying. I have to say its a tuff decision. But considering her first lasted 10 years she might be a great candidate.

Good Luck!!

My daughter was five when she had it done. She got it done the same day as her g-tube. One day in the hospital was hard. The second day we went home and she was disappointed she couldn't jump on the trampoline that day. It has never bothered her after that first day. She had it done laproscopically. We think she had lots of aspiration and lung damage due to reflux before she got the fundo.
