G-tube - popping out!

My kiddo had her peg-pull yesterday and was fitted with a 20French coreflo. We have a Kangaroo Joey pump and I can't seem to get the coreflo to fit the tubing for the 1000ml bag. We have a Y adaptor and that doesn't seem to help either. It's like the adaptor and tubing from the pump are spring loaded and keep popping out of the tube. Has anyone had this problem? I tried rubbing alcohol and drying it and that didn't really seem to help either.

I'll probably take Addie into the GI nurse tomorrow, but I thought I'd check with the real experts first! Should I vent her? It does feel like there is gas or something pushing the tubing out. Thanks in advance! -Elise

I've never had this issue. It sounds like a fit issue. You shouldn't have to vent her, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try.

We have a 14fr mic-key and the zevex infinity pump, so I'm not much help. sorry.

We just got Emily's MicKey so I am not one that can offer much by way of advice yet. I am sorry you are having trouble though!! edited because I looked up your new button and it's nothing like what we have.

We have the same pump that Heather does (Infinity); Emily has an 18 french MicKey. She started with a different one (Boston Scientific One Step Button) and the extensions fit tighter into the tubing for the bags than these Mic-Key ones do. I'm so glad Heather recommended we get an amt clamp to hold the extension and tubing for the bag together because otherwise I can see how they could pull apart pretty easily if Emily rolled around a few times. Maybe trying something like that would hold everything together better.

Elise,
Give us an update when you get information from the GI nurse. Victoria has had a G-tube for 7 years, and I use Microfoam tape whenever I attach the extension set to the tubing. We also have the Kangaroo Joey, but not the corflo so I am not sure this would help you. I use the tape around the junction just as a precaution because sometimes it comes apart, and the pump just keeps feeding because it doesn't know you are not attached anymore. It makes such a huge mess, that I just wrap a few rotations of the tape around it to make sure it never pops off. I also use a safety pin to attach the tubing to her pajamas. I started doing this when she first got her PEG to give the g-tube site time to heal. I think that when they roll around in bed the tubing tugs at the stoma too much so I just add some slack in the extension and where the tape is I use a safety pin to keep it secure. This way you can tug/pull/roll from the pump side all you want, but the stoma is unaffected. This probably sounds confusing, but I can explain it more or send you a photo if that helps. Please do let me know what your nurse says.
Is her PEG brand new? If you have acid leakage issues try powdering up (crush into a fine powder) some antacids (like Tums/Maalox tabs) into Calmoseptine cream and swabbing it around the site. Works nicely! Hope this helps, and best of luck!

Michelle- good idea about pinning the extension to the pajamas. I think I will try that for Emily, because when I checked on her this morning she was on her stomach and the extension was pulled pretty tight against the button. She rarely sleeps on her back so I can see this being an issue for her. She's also clamped her extension in just the short time she's had it by rolling onto it; I've wondered if the 12" extensions are going to be too short for her due to how she likes to sleep... with a longer extension I could pull the clamp farther away from her.

Harriett,
Just to add some details in case you try the pinning...I use the "old school" diaper pins as these are the safest pins to use, and I have not had them open up on Tori while sleeping (ouch!) in all the years we have used these. They have the plastic ends and a deeper chamber for the pin. These are also larger than standard safety pins. Also, I pin through the little loop in the med port of my MicKey extension set. When the extension is attached, and the med port is shut, there will be a perfect little circle there through which you can anchor the pin to her clothes. Otherwise the tubing just slides around inside the gap of the pin. I hope this makes sense.

I attach the end of the extension into her MicKey, lock it in, make an upside down "U" from the stoma towards her face and then down by her ribs I pin the end of the extension to the jammies through the med port loop. The pin is on the outside of her clothing when I am done. I wish I could come on over to show you myself! Both our girls are the same age!

Good Luck and let me know if you need anything at all. The G-tube has been amazing for Tori. She was negative 10th percentile (tiny), and now is around 70% BMI...which is incredible and has made a big difference in her lung function. OK, I am talking too much!

Thanks Michelle~ that makes perfect sense. I wish we could meet too. Not only are our girls the same age- they are both dancers, as you can tell by my signature photo.
