G-tube...

As a lot of you know by now, my son had major bowel resection last week due to complications from meconium ileus at birth. He now has a G-tube and we've been told he will probably start getting feedings through it in another week. I was just curious how many others have dealt with G-tube feedings. He will probably have it in until he's 1 according to docs- and we'll have home health to help deal with meds and hyperal in addition.

Please share your experiences with g-tube, things to be aware of, problems, advice, etc.

Hi there!

Well, I got my G-tube in January, and it does take time to get used to, but honestly, it's been one of the most helpful things! The surgery is pretty fast (30 min or so?). Healing time I hear is usually fast, however I must be one of the people who were still in pain a month or so after.
I've dealt with Granulation tissue, which is a pain, but can be removed with silver nitrate. I think that's the only 'problem' I've had with it, I mostly have good things to say about it! (Well besides the fact that I don't like wearing tighter shirts anymore, but I don't think your son will have to deal with that, haha.)

I hope this helped you some! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Good luck, the G-tube will really help!

I cannot add anything to the conversation regarding the surgeries your son has been through... although I have kept up on what he's been through and have been continually hoping the very best for him. But I just had to post to tell you I *LOVE* your new photo. Zeke is absolutely precious and I continue to wish the very best, for a rapid recovery from his surgery and for all to go well when they start his tube feedings.

Grayson got her G-tube Sept 08. It took just a couple a days of healing. They "said" it wouldnt bother her. We put her on her tummy and she was fine. She hated tummy time, so im not sure if it was cuz it made her work harder to keep her head up, or the multiple surgeries on her tummy. She has a Mic-key button now and plays with it and doesnt bother her at all. When i change it, she don't seemed bothered either. This was a blessing to have. She's really picky eating this week so we have had to use it more. We clean it every day with soap and water, we put a kenalog cream around the site, and put a 2x2 around to help catch any drainage. She has done very well. We put all her meds through the g-tube. I love it. In the begining Grayson threw up a ton and stooled out all over. The docs thought they would have to feed the tube into her bowel to help reduce the throwing up and turn it into a J-tube. I kept her in my room for months. I was so worried she would choke in her sleep. We elevated her bed, slowed her feed down. Little by little it went away. She hasn't thrown up for a couple months now. Her GI doc added fruit pectin to her formula. It's the same thing you can with. She said it helps slow down digestion to help her absorb more since she has a short gut. O, btw, pectin taste's awful. So if you are trying to bottle feed with formula w/ pectin ur lil one may reject it. We slowly added pediasure to her feeds as she got older. Otherwise, Graycie didn't even drink anything until we indroduced pediasure. She now drinks kids boost 1.5cal. I hope you and your family are doing well. Feel free to PM anytime. We can share ideas what works. Good Luck!
