hi,
i posted a couple of days ago about my son and his loose stools. i was wondering, do both my husband and i both have to carry a certain gene for our child to have cf? and if so, is it possible for us to get tested to rule it out so I don't have to put my son thru any tests? and where would you get that done. thanks so much for all the info, i am just worried about my son. i guess it's mom's intuition. i did speak to my mother-in-law and she told me that my husband and his brothers all had loose stools as infants/toddlers...so i wonder if it's just the way he is, but i would like to rule some things out...sorry, i am rambling.....

Yes, both you and your husband need to be carriers. As far as both of you being tested instead of your son, I think it would be better to have your son tested. Genetic testing can be expensive considering the more advanced test, test for 1,000 or so mutations. Also, there are unknown mutations so even a "simple" blood test does not always answer the question.

You should consider getting the blood test and also the sweat test preformed on your son. Just my opinion.

Somtimes at first a more simple test of only 50 or so mutations is covered by insurance. If 2 mutations are not found on that, the more complex test may be approved if other factors (such as sweat test) are heading to a CF diagnosis.
