Genentech

This is just a hypothetical question, of course. But I wanted to hear people's opinions on companies like Genentech, etc. that create amazing products for people like me, who have CF. But the flip side is that their products are extremely expensive and and drain us financially.

I am still trying to figure out what to do with my life, and I am thinking about entering the computer OR biotech industry. (note: this is just hypothetical, I don't have a phD in chemistry or anything like that.)

What do y'all think about these companies? Yes they supply us with our lifeblood, but also take so much from us as well. Maybe my youthful idealism is eroding, but I need to think about a career in which I could afford to pay my rent. Genentech is supposed to be one of the best companies to work for. I'm just not sure of the political repurcussions of working for a corp. like this. Perhaps I think that just because I am a customer it wouldn't be so bad.

Honestly, being an engineer, I kind of understand why the costs of our medications are so high. It costs a TON of money to take them from concept to creation. It is almost unbelievable how much! And unfortunately the costs are handed off to us, since our government has limited funding in this area.
I vote for biotech. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> The more people we have helping to find, test and make, new therapies, the better off we all will be in the long run. Maybe you could help find ways to make these medications cheaper if you were in the field. Just a random thought.

I would work there in a heartbeat. They have made a medication that has made a big difference in my life and I'm greatful for market forces that can induce a company to do such.

If i wanted to live in the bay area I'd work there for sure

ha ha that's funny.

only because last night i was talking with a girl in Berkeley who went OFF about how horrible companies like Genentech are. "They make products for people with cancer and then charge them an arm and a leg to use them"...but I wonder, if she had cancer would she be saying the same thing?

Hers is probably an extreme opinion. It's interesting to hear how people react to these things.
