genetic counseling experiences

I am studying genetic counseling and I was just hoping to get some feedback from real people and families about your experiences with genetic counselors or the process of genetic counseling. Any feedback at all would be greatly (!!) appreciated because it would help me and my classmates gain a better feel for how to be effective counselors. Thank you so much!

I just adore our genetic counselor. She has been a major help to me. She has explained things simply when I needed it and when I had done my own research, she treated me like someone with a brain. She even has offerred to meet with my ILs who seem to continue to think that CF must be from my side of the family, since they don't have any on their side.

I think genetics is fascinating. If I wasn't already in a career I love, I could easily see going this route. Best of luck with your studies.

My only experience with a genetic counselor was when we were first called in for further testing for my infant son. A genetic counselor was provided to interpret the results. She was cold, distant, and rather phony. She was so busy trying to be "professional" that she forgot the most important thing (IMO), compassion. My only advice to you is to "be real".
