Georgia Wildfires

We live in Alabama about 1 hour from the Georgia line. Well I got up this morning and looked outside and there is a haze of smoke. I can smell it and see it. I am a little concerned for my son. I know he probably does not need to go outside to play but I have to go to town today. Anyone else having this problem? I can only imagine what it looks like closer to the fires. What do you do in situations like this? Does anyone know how long it will be before they get the fires out? We have my daughter a big outside birthday party planned for Saturday and now I am getting a little worried about it!

Hi there,

I understand the worries we have been dealing with some smoke issues as well.

We are in North Florida - Jacksonville area - and I actually just got out of the hospital after having transplant - so the smoke is a great concern to us too. I know for me I have been wearing a mask anyway to protect me from everything with the outdoors but the smoke especially.

If you want to try and protect your son I would keep him indoors as much as possible or if he would wear a mask of sorts get him one to wear outside. I know that they are NOT pleasant but if it is THAT bad it may be something you want to look into.

Otherwise I would expect him to cough more with all the smoke and maybe talk to your doc about increasing his neb treatments for albuterol to an extra treatment a day until the smoke dissipates some. Just a thought. A friend of mine has a 4 yr old that has also been having some increased coughing we are thinking it may be because of all of the smoke in the air lately.

Take Care and I hope the birthday party goes well and that the smoke is NOT an issue.

Take Care,
Lindsey

Lindsey,
Thanks for the advice! I think it may actually rain here.....I am hearing thunder in the distance....hopefully if it does that will help some. The smoke is strange here...like this morning when we first woke up it was bad. I could smell and see it. Then as the day wore on it got better and I couldn't really smell it. Now it is looking hazy again. Anyway maybe it will all get better soon! I am so glad to hear of your transplant and how wonderful you are doing. You are such a pretty girl! Take care!

We live in east central Alabama and the smoke is really getting bad here too. It has been getting worse over the past 3 or 4 days. I have been keeping my 5 year old with CF and my 1 yr old w/out CF inside as much as possible. I took my 5 yr old out to run errands yesterday and kept a mask on him whenever he was outside. I was hoping for it to be better today since my dh is off work and wanted to take him to the pool but unfortunately it is even worse today. It burned my eyes just walking out to get the paper this morning. I hope it clears up there for you and your family. I know how hard it is keeping kids inside when they don't understand.
We may have to go visit grandma if this keeps up. They live in southwest Alabama, but haven't had any problems with the smoke yet.
