(Gestational) Diabetes and weight gain

If you had diabetes while pg where you still able to gain weight and if so how much? I have naturally been drawn to read message boards and such with women who have GD but no CF and I freak out when I hear people say they lost weight after finding out they had GD. I am doing my best to eat high calorie while still watching the carbs. I think I am doing a good job but I am SO paranoid about gaining enough weight.
If you do not mind can you share meal/snack ideas with me? I wish I could eat eggs more often but this pregnancy does not really like eggs. I can eat them in a salad with ranch dressing but the idea of a fried egg turns my stomach. So far my biggest challenge is milk. I LOVE milk. I still drink it but try my best to stick with 8oz rather than my usual extra large glass.
Did you drink diet soda or eat sugar free candy? I know they do not add any nutritional value but sometimes I really want a sweet treat. The other day I had a diet Pepsi and it really tore my stomach up. People have told me that the body will get used to artificial sweeteners but after seeing what one drink did to my GI I think it may be best to stay away. It also seems the verdict is out on artificial sweeteners during pregnancy. Your thoughts?
THANK YOU!!!

I'm PS, my metabolism is fast and my GD was very mild. My doctor allowed me to go above the normal carb limits on the GD diet so I was able to eat a little more. I gained about 10 lbs in my last trimester but it was mostly at the very end. I went for four weeks with no weight gain until I figured out that I needed to eat a snack in the middle of the night when I woke up to pee. I also ate 7 times a day rather than the recommended 6. Example:

8am bfast
10am snack
12pm lunch
3pm snack
5pm snack
7pm dinner
9pm snack

Good snacks were string cheese, cheddar, cashews, peanuts/peanut butter, vanilla icecream (only half a cup) with whipped cream, coffee with a tiny bit of sugar and milk, mini chocolates (just one) and pudding (small portion). I stayed away from artificial sweeteners.

My doctor told me that it is okay if you don't gain as long as you don't lose weight (if you have enough body fat to begin with).

Anne,

I have never been pregnant, as you know, but I have been an on-off again diabetic for years.

Firstly, diet Pepsi is the worst diet soda ever!!! I drink diet soda everyday, and that one is the absolute worst. Some of the best diet sodas include Diet Coke, Diet Dr. Pepper, Diet Sprite, and Diet Root. They are very close to the real thing.

As far as regular soda is concerned, it is best to avoid it. However, you could try maybe taking one all by itself in the middle of the day or early evening. Do not wait until late at night because at that time your body is already gearing down and will allow a slower metabolism causing a high blood sugar.

I would make the same recommendations with the chocolate too. Take your sugar about 2 hours post and see where your number is. You will know after just eating or drinking one where you stand.

I know that milk is going slow for you right now but maybe taking a protein shake a day with the milk would be an excellent supplement. The protein shake will makeup for any protein that you aren't able to tolerate in eggs. Plus, it will help you gain weight. You only need 8 oz. of milk per scoop of protein. It might be heavy for you, though...I'm not too sure about it, but it is an idea. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Edited to Add: Bonnie gave some excellent snack choices too!!!
