getting a port

has anyone ever gotten a port and then regretted it? for example, say you had been getting a lot of ivs and then after your port you didn't need as many ivs and you found the port was a hassle to flush every month or something? or, was there another reason you regretted it? like the surgery was a lot rougher than you thought, or they had to redo it, or it got infected or something?

just curious--

Good question, I might end up getting one before the year is up and would like to know some of the details to it all.

I've had mine for about 4 months and I don't mind it. No regrets for me. When I got it, I used it for 1 month, and haven't needed to since. I'm glad that when I'll need IVs again, there won't be a dramatic scene getting a picc or peripheral, they'll just hook me up - pain free. So even if I don't have to use it again for a year, I'm fine with it. It was time. The monthly flushing is fine for me too. You can either have nurses come to your house and have them do it once/month, or you can learn to do it yourself (ouch!) or just go to your doct's office 1x/month and they can do it (that's what i'm doing).

Maybe some other people can share about infections and if that's a huge bother or not. I don't know.

I got my port a year ago, and it makes getting IVs so much better. You can draw blood, and just end up getting stuck alot less. I was against the idea, but it the nurse sticking me 4 times to get a picc line to feed all the way up.

It is tender for amonth, no heavy lifting, but it is ok after that.

I wish I would of gotten it sooner.

my four year old had a port put in earlier this year and he is so much better with it there is none of the anxiety with goin g in for his treatment any more and i do not have to tense up so much anymore and i do not dread the visits anymore he has to have treatment every three weeks at the moment so it is flushed regular anyway, but yes the best thing they ever did he used to get so upset everytime he had to have anything done

I guess i could be against ports after a nasty experience with one
but i'm still not - that goes to show just how amazing i think they
are. First off, my veins are rubbish and i got my first one
even when i was only having iv's 1-2 a year but felt the benefit.
I didn't mind the flushes every month for the convenience and
ease it gave me when on IV's. No pain and no multiple
stabbings hehe. However after 18months it got infected, which
i only found out an hour after it had been flushed and i collapsed
in a shop. I think i basically went into shock as i was
shacking uncontrolably, freezing cold (but high temperature) and
throwing up. Luckily the ambulence came quickly and they soon
started flushing me with vast amounts of fluid and AB's (on my now
forgotten veins so they weren't too bad). I got that port
taken out. Did i wait to get another after that experience?
ABSOLUTELY NOT! Which goes to show you just how amazing i think
they are. MY port doesn't bleed so i still get bloods taken
from my arms but my veins are a lot better now they're not trying
to be accessed all the time.
I have a small pass port now in my arm (just above the inside of
the elbow). I had it put in under local anesthetic (and the
old one taken out under local) which was fine. Felt weird,
but perfectly do-able and painless. Not many people notice it
and i think they would notice it more if it was on my chest when
wearing strappy tops etc. If they ask and you don't fancy
telling the truth funny things can be to say "it's a bottle
top i swollowed and got stuck" hehe or many other things i'm
sure you can come up with. People will believe anything (for
a second at least but it breaks the ice)
Okay i think that's everything hehe. To sum up LOVE IT LOVE
IT LOVE IT hehe
That said i do have a friend who went down from needing 3-4 IV's a
year to less than 1 on average and so had theirs taken out and is
completely happy with that as to them it showed they were a lot
better. Though they do dread IV's more now when they finally
do come around!
