getting g-tube replaced by MicKey

Emily's tube will be replaced by a MicKey button on Thursday. My husband took her to her last GI appt. and was given the appointment date for the switch. We didn't get any more information about it though, and I suddenly realized that I have no idea what to expect! Here are my questions.

1. Will she receive general anesthesia or just a local anesthetic or nothing? (I'd think if it's general we should be getting a call from the GI clinic soon regardind when and what she can eat/drink prior to the procedure...)

2. How is the pain/tenderness afterward? Do you think she'll be pretty back to normal on Friday and ready for daycare? OR, should I get someone to stay home with her?

3. I am sure we'll be taught what we need to know before she is discharged, but, can you tell me how maintenece of the button differs from that for the g-tube?

Anything else I need to know?

Thanks!

When they replaced my son's it was very uneventful. They just deflated the balloon on the old one, removed the big long tube and inserted the mickey button and inflated that balloon (there's a balloon like thing on the inside of the stomach that keeps it in place). Took about 2 minutes, no sedation, no soreness, very anti-climatic - I don't think my son even noticed. You do have to change the mickey button every few months - we do it every six months, used to do it every three months. The doctor will show you how to do it though. The first time I was a little squeemish about sticking something into his stomach, but you get used to it.

Tami -
When you say a g-tube, do you mean a PEG? I had thought that the Mickey was a type of button with the g-tube. I'm asking only because Parker has a PEG and will be getting it replaced with a Mickey in a few months and I want to make sure the responses you get will relate to him as well.
Thanks!
