Got my G-tube!

Hi everyone!

Last Friday, I got my Gtube!
We decided that it really would be the best thing. My lungs went from 50% to 95%...we need to keep that, and everything is connected, so I need the weight!
I was sore a bit..but not its better. I am having problems with my back tho. Anytime (when it was sore)I would stand up..I would crouch over..(like you do with a stomach ache)..after a few days of that, I had a few problems standing up straight and walking.
Back is still annoying, but I am healing nicely. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I went to school today...Oh Boy!!
In one of my classes, I was trying to move my tube around (I have it taped to myself and have this netting stuff over me)...at recess, I realized that I was leaking!

Any tips on taping it down to minimize leakage? lol.
Tips on hiding it?

I can't get over the smell!
I think its the stomach 'juices' and the Ensure!

Any other tips would be helpful, this is all so new to us.

(Also, I can't wait to get my Mic-key button!!)

thanks <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

For the leaking, I place a sponge/gauze around it. It catches all of the "ick", but make sure you change the gauze regularly. Even if it's not leaking at the time, I would change it at least every 12 hours. My surgeon also suggested using corn starch around the site to help keep it dry. Kind of like baby powder, except w/o the talc chances. If the area stays moist too long you run the chance of developing yeast and the like. Just a heads up...

The smell is something I still battle with, but my family says that they can't smell anything. I think I'm just exposed to the smell more so I can pick it out easier. But yes... it's gross. I don't have any solutions for that.

As for hiding it, I didn't tape it. I used a large ACE bandage and wrapped it around my stomach like a girdle, lol. But it smoothed the area and kept the PEG secure. I was able to even wear slightly fitted shirts without anyone noticing!

Oh, and it just occurred to me that you may need to check the amount of fluid in the balloon holding the line in. I'm not sure which "style" of line you had placed. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Your Dr. can prescribe an ointment like stuff called Aquafer that you put around the site and it helps with a lot of the stuff nasty. It will be really nasty around the site for about six months then nothing will come out from around it, at least for me. I had a peg for about 2 or so months then I got a Mickey. The mickey is a lot less noticable.

I hate the smell of my gtube and the formula. Really im the only one that smells it though.

As for appearance I really dont care if people see it, its what I have and I could care less what they think.

Hi There! I also just got a gtube a few months ago--got the peg changed to a Mic-key in December. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVVVVE IT! Best decision i ever made!!!

A Wonderful thing that i found to keep it from leaking-- put a big paper clamp on it, and drain the excess fluid out the end (after clamp is in place). You don't need a huge one, just one big enough to block the width of the tube.

As for hiding it, I just put it inside my pants or skirt. Made sure that it didn't pull too. I really didn't care what people thought either, it helped me and thats all that counted. I now have a mic-key and love it! I don't miss the leakage at all.

And for the 'goup' that gets around the site, I was advised NOT to put gause around it. Just have a tissue in your pocket and excuse yourself to the bathroom periodically to clean it off. No biggie.

Best of luck! I hope you come to appreciate and love your g-tube/button as much as I do!
