My just turned 9 year old son has just started developing a cough with a grunting sound. He says he is not trying to clear his throat. He also has severe nausea (at least once a day) and tummy pain that are (we are assuming) from his bacterial overgrowth in his intestines. Does anyone have any idea what the grunting could be from. My mom said that I did it as a kid with pneumonia. No fever but short of breath (he has a huge asthmatic component). My thought is to wait until Monday (day 3) and if still there call the doc's. Thanks!!
Simplest answer is maybe its a sinus drip, causing the cough and him trying to move secretions up the trachea by grunting. I kind of do this myself especially when lying in bed at night. It kind of feels like the mucous is below your throat but not in your lungs. He'll know what I mean if I'm right!
Tummy pain, simplest answer is not enough creons (or whatever digestive enzymes he takes). Growing boys (and girls!) will start to need many more enzymes as they get bigger. For instance, when I was a kid, I needed maybe 5 of the 10,000, whereas now I need up to 10 of the 25,000: with that increase being added on by 1 or 2 tablets year after year, plus the switch from 10,000 to 25,000 (cos I was taking so many 10,000).
At certain times, I would get severe pain and bloating in my stomach, which was due to trapped wind caused by not enough creons. Releasing the trapped wind by vomiting or by liver salts eased the pain and bloating. More enzymes fixed the problem in my case...
