H. Influenza Cultured

Hi.

DD has been culturing H Influenza on and off since diagnosis in May. The clinic doesn't usually treat this unless there is an exacerbation or bacterial infection. Does anyone have any personal experience with this one?

Thanks!

Edan.

My daughter has been culturing this the last few visits as well. I was told it is pretty common, especially in young CF patients, and that it isn't something treated unless there is an issue.

Marty was on Omnicef for this a couple of times. It is pretty common in the sinuses and in CFers it goes into the lungs. It really didn't cause too many problems except for one time when he was pretty sick. We were pretty sure that was the cause. It is gone now and he doesn't culture it anymore

Thanks for your replies. I just wonder if it stay in there, does it make her lungs more ripe for culturing other things?

Interestingly, we are both on antibiotics right now for sinus infections. My doc coincidentally prescribed omnicef for me. I had never even heard of that abx before!

My daughter has cultured it a few times while also being symptomatic. One of my boys has cultured it while he was coughing. I think they were both on antibiotics when they cultured it. Their old dr.s policy was to treat only if symptomatic but their new dr's opinion is to treat regardless. She said it serves as a "gateway" to more serious bugs. I guess everyone just has their own opinion

Ok, this is driving me crazy now. I just relooked at her culture results from 2 weeks ago, and apparently she now has an antibiotic resistant strain. Will it ever go away on it's own? Or are we stuck with this one forever? Is this just what I should expect from now on? Do all cf kids culture something, no matter what?

Thanks.
