Hand washing

I was wondering if there is any way to keep from washing the skin off of your hands? I now have spots that are cracking and have sores because I have washed them so much. I probably wash and germ x 30 times a day. I didn't know if anyone had any tips in this area.

Hand washing is sooo important, but you can overdo it, just like anything else -- especially with antibacterial soap.

You might try keeping hand cream near your germ x and squirting some after using.

Its so hard, because handwashing sometimes feels like all we can DO to help our kiddos, but it won't be helpful if you wash your skin off your hands.

Is there a heavy-duty moisturizer you could put on your hands before you go to bed at night? I'm thinking along the lines of one of the ones that goes on more like ointment, not a light cream... that's likely to be the only time enough hours will pass that it will stay on long enough to be helpful; and if you have to wake up during the night and wash again, you can reapply when you go back to bed. Some soaps are also antibacterial but have moisturizers or aloe in them, so will be less harsh on your skin than others. I'd experiment with that. Even GermX comes in a version with aloe that might be worth a try.

Wearing rubber gloves when cleaning & washing dishes, etc may also help- it will help keep your hands dry and not exposed to the cleaning agents you use (which no doubt are irritating to already dried out skin.)

Thirty times a day sounds like a LOT to me, but my child with cf is older- she can blow her own nose, go to the bathroom on her own, cover her own cough and as a rule doesn't mouth random household surfaces... so it's different criteria to spread around the hand washing.

ugh... i feel your pain on the hand washing/sanitizing! Even my hubby who has never had issues with dry hands in the past (i had issues a few years back when working in a restaurant) now has incredibly dry hands.

My tip: get some cheap mittens/gloves and apply a heavy cream to your hands overnight. I found that the Aveeno Eczema cream, while a tad on the pricey side works wonders!! Everytime i start bleeding/cracking from over-washing/sanitizing i do this for a couple nights in a row and it helps restore moisture to my hands! I've also put perfume free lotions at each area we hand wash or sanitize so right after sanitizing or handwashing we now apply a light dose of lotion as well. Good luck!

And just an FYI - We handwash/sanitize before we ever pick up our son, everytime! So we're probably doing our sanitizing 30-50 times in a day which is a killer on the hands of course!

I notice with certain soaps I've had issues. I don't tend to notice it with the foam based soaps whereas the tops of my hands and knuckles would get really raw when I used gel based soaps.

I use hand sanitizer quite a bit at work -- when I return to my desk and haven't had issues with it. I did used to buy the same stuff they have at the clinics -- foam which I got from an ecolab rep -- that stuff is pretty soothing and has moisturizers in it.

DH has really dry hands and uses hand lotion a lot -- believe he uses neutrogena norwegian hand cream. I don't like the feeling of hand lotion and when my hands are raw it seems to feel worse.

I wash my hands constantly - both for my daughter's sake and because I work in the veterinary field. My hands used to crack and bleed...quite a painful and ugly sight. I have found a combination of lotions that has truly worked wonders - alternate between Cetaphil cream and Vaseline Sheer Infusion. Nothing else has worked for me and I've tried many things!!!

I just feel like all I do is wash or germ x! With two in diapers and cleaning before I touch things that will go in her mouth, I wash them a ton! I don't think I would be so concerned with it if it wasn't for the fact she is already sick. She barely started getting over her first cold before the weather here changed and she got a snotty nose again!
