hey guys so i was thinking about asking my mom about getting me a handicap sign, maybe not now, but in the future, for like when i go to college. i was on the RMV website and the eligibilty part said that if you:

"Are restricted by lung disease to such a degree that your forced (respiratory) expiratory volume (FEV) in one second, when measured by spirometry, is less than one (1) liter"

... so my question is.... what does that meen? what does my FEV have to be to get one? haha its such a wordy statement i dont get it! and also... does anyone think it would be bad to get one as a teenager? i have a car so i dont see why not... but sometimes i think im 'jumping the gun' or w/e... haha i guess thats the right term...

thanks y'all!

hell, go for it if you can. as far as #'s that's not really fair b/c someone who is 6'5"and some one who is 4'10" with one litre of function is way different. I know that that is the state though. I figure that we will probably never retire so we should take what we can get lol. ok I don't really think that way but still go for it. the worst they can say is no.

ditto to what ben said! litres is a REALLY bad way of comparing lung function between different people of different age, gender and height.

as someone who is 6', i cant stand it when someone compares my lung function in litres to someone who is half the height of me. whats good for a midget isnt good for a giant.

<span style=" font-size: x-small;">Do not be discouraged with the
DMV rules. When you are ready for a handicap placard all you need
to do is get the application signed by your Dr. When your Dr says
that you are qualified for a placard the DMV will issue you one.
That thing about the 1 liter is just a guide line not a rule. You
and your Dr have the say. If you need it go ahead and get it.
But dont forget that exercise is important to our health too. So if
you are capable of walking the distance it wont hurt you. But by
all means if you cant walk it then get it, its your right. I myself
have one. Hope that helps!

more good points have arised. if you need it, talk to your doc. if you want it then see hown your #'s compair to the rules, and if it's close talk to your doc. I'm all for the extra walk, but i understand that not everyone is the same.
