Harsh non productive cough

Hi - Jason has started with that horrible cough. This time of year we can always count on it a few times. He started with a runny nose, then got congested and then that went away and he woke up Tues. with this cough. The difference this time is that it isn't worse at night and better in the afternoon. It is constant. Any suggestions other than lots of liquids and alb. treatments every 4 hours plus his regular meds. Hoping it doesn't get out of control and need prednison. I have it on hand if necessary. In the past he usu. coughs and it turns into a gagging type cough and he throws up mucus. This time the cough is just staying harsh, constant and non productive. He really isn't even able to sleep. Any suggestions would be helpful.....

Hi JoAnn,

My eight year old son Andrew gets the same type of cough when he gets sick....loud, deep, and harsh. I have come to think that even though it seems the cough is unproductive, it is actually Andrew not knowing how to get rid of the "gunk". If I really pay attention after he coughs he often swallows, meaning it's just not making it all the way out of his system. We go around and around about this because when he feels lousy the last thing he wants is me nagging him to try to "spit it out". But the more he swallows the "gunk" down, the worse and longer the cough is. Have you noticed that with Jason?

I know it is an awful sound to listen to and your throat almost hurts for them because it is just constant. I wish I had advice on what works for us, but it usually takes a round of oral antibiotics. No real instant relief that I've found. Good luck and hang in there.
