My daughter was diagnosed late with CF (8 years old). She had always been very petite, but had stopped gaining weight. She was 42 pounds when she was diagnosed. Once she started enzymes she started to put on weight. I can't remember exact numbers, but now at almost 14 years old she is 110 pounds. So yes, I would say that they work.

I can't remember your exact situation, but if your daughter is pancreatic insufficient, enzymes should help with weight gain. If something else is causing weight gain problems, I don't think enzymes would work.

Her fecal elestase was normal. I asked the cf specialist if we could try enzymes to see what happens and he agreed. He also said if they work he will do a scope and stimulate her pancreas to check to see if there is mild PI the fecal elestase didn't pick up. She's been FTT on/off since infancy. My daughter is 5yo.

Yes! My dd was a late dx as well- she was 7.5 by the time she was dx'ed. Growth failure was actually what led to her dx. She was chubby as a baby and toddler and then from age 3 onward stopped gaining and growing and started falling off the growth charts.

She gained 8 pounds and grew 2" the first year after starting enzymes- after only gaining/growing a total of 3lbs/2.5" in the previous 3.5yrs prior to dx. So yes, they absolutely make a difference!

DS is PI and needs enzymes; however, a few years ago he had some issues with adhesions from his bowel surgery as a newborn, causing his digestion to slow down. Basically the enzymes weren't able to make it thru to the small intestines, so it was as if he wasn't getting enzymes. So once that was corrected thru surgery, it was amazing the amount of food he ate AND the weight he gained in a short period of time. Think he gained 5-6 pounds within 2 months and grew in height.

Absolutely!! I know my daughter wouldn't be here today without them. She was six weeks of age and had not gained an ounce when she started taking enzymes. She gained a pound the first week. For many with CF, enzymes have allowed this disease to be mainly respiratory instead of digestive. Enzymes have significantly improved the life expectancy for those with CF. Of course, I am referring to those that are pancreatic insufficient.
Sharon, mom of Sophia, 9 and Jack, 7 both with CF, Grant, 2 and Paige, 9 months both without CF.

Enzymes were a life saver for my two boys with CF also. My kids have both taken Creon enzymes since they were little but they just recently switched my 11 yr. old to Zenpep which is very similar to Creon. This helped with the "stinkiness" of his stools immediately as well as the greasiness. We can already see a difference in his weight but keep in mind he has a g-button also but I believe it helps with the absorption better than the Creon did. Good luck...
