Health Advice Needed

Okay so I need some advice on what might be going on and whether to visit the dr. or not. So I was on IV's for three weeks in June. And having been feeling great!!!!! I've even been exercising really good these past few weeks, so on friday morning I coughed up about a tablespoon of blood, but I also started my period so I was thinking those were attached. Then I've just been busy etc... so saturday night I came home at 7pm and was so tired and sore, got a fever etc..... felt horrible! Then sunday morning I felt great! no fever, energy, went to church and on the way home....... coughed up blood (yep, in a neighbors backyard, why can't it wait till I get home?????) it was about 1/2 cup, so a lot more. I also had a fever again last night, but feel okay today, I took tylenol this morning, other wise feeling okay.

So my question, what is going on? and should I go to the dr.? The only thing with the dr. is they can't do anything but put me on IV's. I don't think I have an infection because I was on IV's just a month ago!!!!!!!! and it's summer, my best time!!!!! Do you think it's just my period? But then again I had fevers.... I hate when this happens!!!!! Any Advice would be helpful, Thanks

If anything else happens to you they need to know the source. Tell your doctor your feelings about the IV and maybe you will not need one.

I would not take tylenol if I had bleeding. That is just me unless I had an extremely horrible headache and nothing else was available.

I use esential oils like lavender and pepermint for a headache.

Are you taking Vit K? I think it is time to see your doctor just for your future.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm pretty sure your
infection has returned. I once asked my doc about the whole
coughing up blood thing and he told me it happens when thick mucus
that's been there for awhile rubs up against a blood vessel in your
lungs. He said it's your lungs way of telling you that you have an
infection.

It has NOTHING to do with your period--two entirely separate
systems at work.

I know you just had IV's in June, but maybe an oral antibiotic or
neb would do the trick?
I definitely think you need something and should call your doc.
Sorry...it stinks...I know...been there.

p.s. Fevers are also a sign of infection. I use to get them a lot
b/f my last clean out and would take Tylenol at my doc's
suggestion. He'd tell me it was important to get the fever down
right away. Once that was under control he'd put me on an
antibiotic.

I have read in many CF journals in the eighties and nineties that there is a correlation between when woman get their periods to when they have lung bleeds. I do not know how much blood is present to be an infection but when I was young 17-20 I would only see a teaspoon at most of blood and it was always during my period.

I started to eat really well and started taking selenium and multimineral pill and I never saw blood again even when I become chronically ill with CF.

I get bleederies around my period.

That being said, if you have a fever, you have an infection again. Perhaps the bacteria wasn't killed completely, or you have been over-exerting yourself this summer (you said summer was your best time so i'm assuming lots of activity) and the bacteria grew again

Dehydration can allow PA and other bacteria to flourish. With the heat that's been going on across the country, I wouldn't be suprised if you were super dehydrated and your bacteria grew back.

Also check vitamin K levels and get a CT scan of your lungs to identify the problem.

IV's suck. The hospital sucks. And CF. sucks. I'm sorry you're ill again, but get IV's and call your doc ASAP to prevent further lung damage.

Keep us posted.

Thanks everyone, I do take Vit K twice a week, but when I cough up blood I take it once or twice a day. I have always had blood around my period, but usually not big bleeders. Also since I have Cepacia no other antibiotics work for me except IV's! That's the big bummer. I do need to try your selenium and Multimineral thing Risa.

Why isn't it good to take tylenol when you have a bleeder???

Most pain killers can thin the blood. Ibprofin, asprin, etc.

Tylenol does not...... it's the only pain killer i'm allowed to take now cuz I get bleeders every so often so my doc doesn't want me thinning my blood

Coughing up blood isn't always a sign of infection. I cough up blood once and awhile, and I never have infections with it. Some bleeders are caused by weakened blood vessels that have been eaten away by bacteria, and so therefor when you cough you can open a weak vessel. That is always my problem - my viens are weak. Bleeders can also be caused by blood thinners - i.e. garlic, oregano, asperin, etc.

I feel that an excess amount of Tylenol is not good for your liver and I just never take it unless I am doubling over in pain and that has not happened in ten years(i had a bad period one time)I take so many drugs as is. I do not like to take tylenol just for a headache. I love my essential oils for that.

From what I remember tylenol depletes glutathione levels and if CF patients need all the GSH they can get why take something that depletes it from the body? Then again if you are in serious pain and cannot fall asleep and you have nothing else that works ten I say take the pill.

I hope you feel better very soon and that you have no more bleeding every again.

I know that you & I have very similar triggers when it comes to the hemoptysis. For me when I am do for my period besides the cramps etc I have been known to run fevers & have hemoptysis. If things dont ease in a few days or however long your period lasts that obviously there is no ?? or if it progresses. I hope its that simple for you!

I think if you are a regular 'bleeder'-meaning, you've had them before, you get them frequently, you're used to them, then maybe it is related to you period. Even so, it is not normal for a woman to cough up blood during her period. So something isn't right maybe.

If you don't get bleeding often, check and see if you've added anything new to your regimen. I got blood in my mucus for the 1st time a few months back and I had started Hyp Saline that month. So that was why.

To me the biggest tell tale sign is the fever. That usually means somethng is brewing.

Take care!

Roshelle,
I am so sad to hear that you coughed up blood again, I know how frustrating it is. I would definitely give a call to the docs just to let them know what is going on. It never hurts to do that. I know you don't want to do IVs again, but if it is what is needed it is better than letting it go and causing further damage. You said you were needing a doctor visit soon anyway, it would probably be wise to get in to them.

I have been told that coughing up blood means inflammation of the
lungs. Whenever I have steaks of blood coming from my lungs my
doctor puts me on Prednisone. Prednisone is not an antibiotic it is
a steroid so that might help. Not only does Prednisone help
with the inflammation but it helps with spasming of the lungs.
Fever though means infection. So it might be a combination of
inflammation of the lungs and an infection. I agree with the other
posts about talking to your doctor about your symptoms and see what
to do. Sometimes when I exercise too much and I'm on the go I
cough up blood streaks. I think it is my bodies way of saying slow
down a bit. I hope you feel better!
