Hey there,
I just started taking Nexium for acid reflux. My serious issues started when I was on IV antibiotics this past time. My new doc started me on the Nexium because I had so many symptoms of reflux - coughing, chest pain/tightness, shortness of breath and that acid coming up feeling also wheezing - especially positional wheezing (like when you are laying down or if you bend over and have your head below your waist and wheeze at those times only).
My symptoms have practically gone away now that I have been taking Nexium - I have been on it for just over a month now. I will still get an occasional acid feeling in my throat when I have mexican food - but it is very rare and no where near as uncomfy as it was before.
As for this being a CF thing. I talked to my doc about some of the symptoms and he was saying that they often get worse with age. He said too that with CFers if we are coughing alot or very hard that it can weaken the muscles that control the "flap" that covers the esophagus. When we cough puffs of air hit that "flap" and after so long the flap starts to become weak. When that becomes weak it starts to open at times it shouldn't - such as when we lay down or if we bend over - and acid can make its way up.
I don't think that it is directly related to CF - but I think the other issues we have - with the coughing and such - can make reflux more likely to occur.
