Im guessing that heart burn and acid reflux are about the same thing, Im guessing Im not sure, but I was wondering if/or how many people on here has heart burn/acid reflux and if they do, do you take something for it, or just bare the burning sensation.

I used to take tums, mainly because of the calcium in it, but not any more and I notice Ill go through spurts of heart burn, Ill have it for awhile then it will go away and stay away for a while then come back again. Also I sometimes have stuff come back up into my mouth/throat, but not too often, so I was just curious if this is kind of a cf thing or what.

Hiya. I get pretty severe heart burn/acid reflux and for a while, I would bare it, drink milk, whatever it would take to make it stop. Then I got on meds, Protonix, then Nexium. I started to see an acupuncturist about 8 months after I started taking nexium. She put me on betain/pepsin/Hydrochloric acid pills for my heart burn, and it is now under control without either perscription. I take a pill with every meal, and the burn stays away. You can get betain/pepsin/HCL at any drug store, but i'd talk to a doctor before trying it. dunno if it's really a "CF thing", but heart burn sucks. I hope you can find something to help.

They are the same in that you have pain from stomach acid coming up into your esophagus and that's why you feel the burning pain. But, actual diagnosed Reflux disease is when the valve separating the esophagus and the stomach is essentially broken. It is supposed to only open and close to let food and good digestive acid pass into the stomach, but at certain times it opens and acid backs up when it shouldn't. It is much more severe than occasional heartburn.

When I am having reflux disease flareups, it is more painful than anything. For me, it is as bad as an intestinal blockage or having an iv put in. I have so much corrosion to my esophagus lining, they have to watch it closely b/c I've developed precancerous cells. My first endoscopy was 6 months ago, when they found the cells. Thank God I went and had it done! They can safely avoid it turning to cancerous cells with meds. But if I had a doctor tell me say, 5 years ago, this too could have been avoided. I try to tell as many people as possible, if you have any acid pain that goes on for an extended period of time please see a gastroenterologist and consider an endoscopy. It could literally save your life. And we can't afford any more worries about our mortality!

Take Care and I hope yours clears up!

They're the same thing.

I've had it for years. Most CFers, including myself, are on a PPI such a Prilosec, Nexium, Aciphex, or Protonix.

My heart burn is like acid coming right up my throat and sometimes into my mouth.. it happens all the time... they diagnosed me with hyper acidic stomach because i can eat a whole bottle of tums, rolaids or you name it and it won't stop.. sometimes it will neutralize the acid but then like water will just be coming up.. i take losec everyday (or supposed to when i don't forget which is usually when i'm taking the cipro cause you can't take anything like that around the time you take it) but i think basically they are the same thing, except with most people heart burn is every once in a while and acid reflux is chronic

Hey there,

I just started taking Nexium for acid reflux. My serious issues started when I was on IV antibiotics this past time. My new doc started me on the Nexium because I had so many symptoms of reflux - coughing, chest pain/tightness, shortness of breath and that acid coming up feeling also wheezing - especially positional wheezing (like when you are laying down or if you bend over and have your head below your waist and wheeze at those times only).

My symptoms have practically gone away now that I have been taking Nexium - I have been on it for just over a month now. I will still get an occasional acid feeling in my throat when I have mexican food - but it is very rare and no where near as uncomfy as it was before.

As for this being a CF thing. I talked to my doc about some of the symptoms and he was saying that they often get worse with age. He said too that with CFers if we are coughing alot or very hard that it can weaken the muscles that control the "flap" that covers the esophagus. When we cough puffs of air hit that "flap" and after so long the flap starts to become weak. When that becomes weak it starts to open at times it shouldn't - such as when we lay down or if we bend over - and acid can make its way up.

I don't think that it is directly related to CF - but I think the other issues we have - with the coughing and such - can make reflux more likely to occur.
