Hello everyone - introduction

Hello everyone.

I'm so excited to come across this board! There have been many times I've wanted to speak with other CFers about pregnancy. There are so many unique issues we have to face. Let me start by introducing myself.

My name is Karen and I'm 27 w/CF from NY. I'm currently 29 weeks pregnant with twin boys. Prior to conceiving my husband was tested and is not a carrier. Up until around 25 weeks I felt great. Since then my cough has gotten increasingly worse and my CF doc and OB both agree that I should start a 2 week course of IV ceftazidime. If I wasn't pregnant I would not hesitate, however I really wanted to make it through this pregnancy drug free and I am nervous about starting next week. I looked through a few posts on here and saw that a few others have been on this drug when pregnant and everything turned out fine, and that eases my mind greatly. My OB is also giving me a course of steroid shots for the boys lungs incase of pre-term birth.

I'm looking forward to reading more posts and sharing stories with many of you.

Welcome aboard!

I ended up on that at the end of my pregnancy along with the steroids shots because we delivered early by c section due to my hemoptysis that finally kicked in.

I was on orals through the pregnancy as a precaution also, but for the life of me cant remember what they were.

I realize that you want to stay drug free, but trust me when I tell you that you need your lungs to stay as healthy as possible.

The pregnancy is just the beginning. The after care is what takes its toll!

Good Luck & Enjoy!

WELCOME and CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I did not do IV meds for either pregnancy. Around 30 weeks of my first pregnancy I started to run a low grade fever and had an increased cough. All of the doctors brushed it off as something viral. My water broke at 34 weeks and our daughter was born 27 hours later. She stayed in the NICU for 9 days. She has been as healthy as can be since then. *knock on wood* I often wonder if I did IV's around the time the fevers started, if I would have carried closer to term. Who knows!
Looking back at my second pregnancy, I should have done IV meds. I took oral antibiotics 3 times during the pregnancy. I would take the antibiotics for 3 weeks and feel great. A couple of weeks after the last antibiotic I would start feeling crummy again. My health has been a bit unstable since having my daughter. It is not really bad but my PFT's are jumping around a lot between 60% and 85%. Up until this point in my life my CF has been super stable. There is no way of knowing if I had done IV's during pregnancy if things would have evened out better after delivery. Who knows.
In your situation I would take the IV meds. In my opinion it is better to do them now and not risk getting sicker. You need to be as healthy as possible for labor and delivery and for being a new MOMMY! It is really hard work. Totally worth it but really hard!
I know the worry about exposing your babies to meds. I still worry about taking meds because I am breastfeeding. It is a hard decision to make but your doctors will work to pick meds that are as safe as possible.
Good luck!

we are due around the same time! I am almost 29 weeks, I am finishing up a round of iv's. I didn't need any with my first pregnancy, but I am glad I gave up and did them this time. that way I could take IV iron as well. I was very anemic and couldn't keep any form of the iron pills down most days, since I started the iv's I have only thrown up once yeah <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
Anyway I usually do 2 differnt meds when on ivs, this time just one ( merepenem) and stayed on ihaled colistin. my pft's have gone up, although I am still short of breath, but they are starting to think that part has more to do with the baby's position than infection.
I am supposed to call my dr tomorrow and hopefully pull the line wednesday, which is my birthday. just in time for me to cook thanksgiving and not have to worry about over using my left arm( with the picc)
the ivs will help, you want to have all your strength when those boys arrive. Two of my best friends have multiples ( one twins, one trips) they are so much fun to be around, but I know it is crazy for a while.
