Thank you so much for your words of hope and kindness. It sure has helped me. My son and girlfriend are going through so much with my grandson. I really do not know much about this disease but it sure is heartbreaking to see anyone suffer. My question is since it is so hard for anyone to gain weght and size how does this affect them academically in school and are they "slow" . My grandson I have already noticed does not do things that other children his age do crawling was delayed and he is not yet walking. His teeth were early.

Thanks for all your support.

Love and prayers,

Margo

CF does not cause any kind of mental delay. My daughter is very intelligent, gets straight "A's" and pretty much taught herself how to read by age 4 1/2! And be reading many of the posts by the 'older' CFer's, it seems intelligence may just be another CF trait!? hehehe

Margo,
My son too was slow in developmental milestones as a baby because his weight was such a struggle. Once he caught up everything else did too. Both of my children with Cf get good grade and are very bright. Seems most Children with CF are on the bright side.

The only way the weight/eating issues should affect your grandchild is the same way it would affect anyone else. If you dont eat properly your attention span is off, you might be more tired or more hyper depending on the individual. You might be more prone to colds etc because you arent eating healthy. It is possible that if calcium/Vitamin D is lacking the bones would not develop as well. That is easily fixed by providing a supplement especially since Vitamin D is one that CFers dont absorb well. Just to have weight issues in itself is no reason to worry. It is hard when they are little. You are trying to make decisions based on observations. If there are any other ??? we can answer, please ask!

My daughter has always been an "A" student. She is one of those lucky ones that doesn't need to study and study to get things. But I think with babies it's hard to compare. Not all babies do things when they are expected and that doesn't necessarily mean they are slow. This could be due to the fact that your grandson is not getting the nourishment he needs. Once he does he may just surprise you. I have heard that boys tend to do things slower? since I have 3 daughters I don't know if that's true or not. I'm sorry I'm not much help!

I was an A/B student all through school. In elementary I had trouble reading, but quickly overcame that. I was speaking by the time I was 2, walking by 10 months.
