My almost 3yo has extreme pain before pooping... she'll start wailing in the middle of the night. I'll have to hold her until she is done. It sometimes can take a 1/2 hour till she finishes. Once she is done I can calm her down and get her to go to sleep again.

This also happen during the day before she poops but it is not always as dramatic. She'll fuss and then a few minutes later she'll poop.

Does this sound normal to you? I'm very concerned. It's horrible for her to be in pain like this when she poops.

Has anyone seen this and has ideas of what could help?

If it helps her stool is usually runny to mushy. We've never seen formed poop with her. It's also very smelly.

She did have c-diff a month ago. Also we've recently switch to a new brand of enzyme. We've been trying it for about a week.

Any ideas or advice would be appreciated!

Take care!

My son would ocassionally complain of gut-ache if he was under-enzymed and it was due to gas building up. Once the gas escaped, the pain would be gone. If he is over-enzymed, his ache is more about constipation and it is a tougher time getting rid of the ache; sometimes we'd give him a bit of chocolate or other fatty stuff without any enzymes to help loosen things up, but usually it just takes some uncomfortable time.

If it's been going on more than a day or two and it is not obviously due to enzyme troubles, I'd just give the CF doc a call and ask for advice.

It could be an enzyme issue but it sounds like she needs to add fiber as well. We use fibercon w/calcium that works great for Nathan. Another option might be Miralax.

I would also be on the look out for prolapsing to occur. I know when Nathan had a lot of pain with his bowl movements the prolapsing would start occurring, it was one of our first signs that it was going to happen soon. Not sure if there is anything you can do to prevent this other than fiber or Miralax again.

I would definetely call the pulmo team and ask about enzymes and some kind of fiber supplement or other advice that they might have. If she is having that much pain, they should be able to do something for her to help.

LOL, let us know what you find out.

My daughter had these issues before she was on enzymes and when she was not getting enough enzymes. I would call the CF clinic and ask what they think.
