My 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with asthma when she was 18 mo. old. She was a 32 wk. preemie but never had the CF screening because it was not offered. Anyway, her asthma has progressively gotten worse and worse. Since Aug 2005 she has been hospitalized for astma and phuenmonia 6 times. This last time they careflighted her to the Childrens hospital where they told me that her x-ray wasnt clear but it wasn't pheumonia. Yet her wt. blood cell count was high but she had no fever. They sent her home. She has a persistant cough that seems to never go away, and has her neb treatments at least 5 times a week during a good week. Her pulmonlogist is unwilling to do any additional testing saying that she has asthma only. She has tested negative for all allergies. And her Ig? test have all come back normal. It was suggested to me by another doctor that she have a sweat test done. Should i be worried?

Does your daughter taste salty or have digestive issues?

Either way, you should probably have your daughter tested. If it is positive, you will know how to treat her better. Be sure that you have her tested with an accredited CF center (www.cff.org).

No she isnt salty. I didnt know how to test that besides licking her arm. But as far as digestive issues, that is hard to answer. She can smell up a bathroom worse than a drunken trucker and purps constantly.

There's no nice way to put this...

Is her poo oily, bulky or does it float?

Is her weight/height low for her age (or is she skinny)?

She has very large outputs. Where I want to say "OMG that came out of a 5 year old!" and it usually looks plastic. She was a preemie so she is small compaired to other kids her age but she has a twin that is perfectly healthy and is a lot smaller than her. But in retrospect, I have a sister that is only 4ft 11in and a brother that is 6 ft 2in. But weight wise she has lost 10 pounds in 3 months. She only weighs 41 lbs.

The weight loss is concerning, but 41 lbs is average weight for a 5 year old girl.

I would say it is best to put your mind at ease by having her sweat tested.

I think you should have her do a sweat test. That will put your mind at ease, there is a reason she has poor weight gain and you need to find out what is causing it, so that you can help her.You also mention your brother and sister are of small build (i'm not sure)

However, the weight loss does sound a little concerning!

Best to ask the experts, maybe even get a second opinion.

Good luck
