Hep A

We just found out today my nephew has Hep A. I know it isn't Hep C, but how concern should I be about contact with my children? Is there an extra concern with Cf? I just found out and will probably call my ped in the morning. My daughter's birthday is Thursday and we usually have the family celebration. Just trying to be cautious.

Thanks
Amy

Here is a good fact sheet info on hep A

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hepatitis/a/fact.htm
">http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dise.../hepatitis/a/fact.htm
</a>
here is how it is transmitted --

HAV is found in the stool (feces) of persons with hepatitis A.
HAV is usually spread from person to person by putting something in the mouth (even though it might look clean) that has been contaminated with the stool of a person with hepatitis A.

They've added that vaccination to the required ones in our state. DS already had his because his ID doctor recommended it before we went to a wedding in Mexico a year and a half ago.

Make sure your kid isn't sharing snacks with other kids. For example, at a movie theatre, don't let them all dig their hands into the same bucket of popcorn. Or if you're having cake and ice cream, don't let the person infected with Hep A do the scooping. Basically the main concern is in food handling. Be sure that hands are washed at the necessary times (i.e. before eating, after using the restroom, etc.) You don't need to go overboard or get over worried.

I cultured Hep. A about 5 years ago when my husband and I were dating. It went away pretty easily, but during that time I refrained from preparing dinner for us (which was tough, I LOVE to cook). We went out to eat instead.
