Hi, I'm 23 with CF. I started taking garlic capsules alot of years ago, and after a few bottles, did not notice any significant effect. Then I read an article about the 'active' compound in garlic, and that it is lost during processing in many over the counter garlic supplements. So I tried eating garlic cloves raw. I know, I know, how gross is that!? And it is extremely gross. It burns your mouth and brings tears to your eyes. HOWEVER after eating a clove or two, I could really feel the difference. Congestion cleared within a few minutes. It seemed like my mucous would just liquify immediately and I could cough easily. I eat raw garlic about 3-4 times a week. But whenever I feel a cold coming on, I increase my intake to 2 cloves a day. It's absolutely amazing! I haven't been on antibiotics in 6 years. I have on average 1 cold per year (last year it was zero!). The one MAJOR downside to eating raw garlic is obviously the aftertaste which seems to last for hours and more obviously the wonderful breath you have afterwards. I'm married, so obviously I didn't want to smell like I was warding off vampires around my husband, but he is extremely understanding. And I always arrange to eat it just before I go to bed so I'm not breathing stink breath on everyone all day.

Anyways, that's my experience with garlic. If you decide to try it, I hope it works as well for you as it has for me.

Oh ya, one important tip - raw garlic must be CHEWED. Why? Because the active healing compound in garlic is only formed AFTER it is chewed or crushed. Why? Because allicin (active component) is not present in fresh garlic. It is formed after alliin (substrate) comes into contact with alliinase (enzyme) which is done by chewing or crushing. The enzyme acts on the substrate to form allicin which is the compound you need. Now I know most of the garlic supplements state each capsule contains a certain amount of allicin, and on-and-off I buy a different brand to try it out. NEVER has a supplement come close the effects of eating it raw. It's a major piss-off, but I guess you can't always get what you want.

If you dice up the raw garlic (I use a food processor) and then drink it down with a little bit of water you can bypass the actual chewing. Be careful to just take a little of a time though - I can say from experience if you try to drink too much diced up garlic you might puke - I say this from expereince - but the benenfits are worth the uncomfort of eating the garlic.

Nichole, My husband uses Echinacea Goldenseal Liquid to boost his immune system when he feels a cold coming on. Goldenseal should be used infrequently and NOT for long periods of time. It seems to help him. Also, increase the vitamin C if you are starting to feel a little bit down.

In reading this I just had to laugh... I use garlic in lots of my cooking, and my husband teases me... he says I smell like garlic (even in instances I don't use it)... he calls me his "little garlicy lady".

I've heard a lot about garlic, and how it can help. Congrats of being antibiotic free! That is great to hear...

I found it most beneficiary when both couples have garlic!

In Japan, there are several Ramen shops, which serve "Stamina Ramen"! It has a combination of garlic and other stuff to boost a person's energy.
I think it's a "seasonal" dish (couldn't find it last week on the menu), mostly to fight off the exhausting summer heat. I've had it a few times in the summer, and it's helped.
I suppose the only one who really would suffer is the Mother-in-Law--we don't take her!

I've tried processing about two cloves of garlic which makes about two massive heaping tablespoons. I then coat my mouth with milk as to prevent the oils from the garlic sticking to my mouth. I then wash down the tablespoons like i am taking a bunch of enzymes (no chewing). It stays in my mouth for a second and then down she goes. I finish with another swish of milk.

Easy. But if you cant swallow the garlic you've got a problem; you smell like garlic and no one likes you.<img src="i/expressions/brokenheart.gif" border="0">

In an Oriental market or grocery store, they sell Lilly Bulbs for comsumption. Take the bulbs boil about a minute or two, where the bulbs are still firm. Remove and add a bit of honey.

In Oriental Medicine/food culture Lilly Bulbs strengthen the lungs, as do fresh Asian Pears (and most other pears).
