Hermit Crab

Sorry...Question on letting my son get a hermit crab. I have never had one, and this is really not my thing. But today we were at the pet store and the subject came up. Johnnys older cousins wanted to get him one, and shot the idea down. Later this evening my nephew said "I wish Johnny didn't have cystic fibrosis that way he could have a hermit crab". OMG stab my in the heart. It's the first time any of my relatives children have ever used the word "cystic fibrosis". It was a good thing!! It opened up the conversation on all kinds of things. By the way I didnt tell them no and blame CF. I told them "Johnnys only 4, let's wait till he is older".

So, can someone tell me their experiences with hermit crabs??? Thanks!

ok... we have a sea tank at home ... my husband does test on the water very often - never had problems...
the problem can however be with moist sand - as hermit crabs like to live in? you'ld have to test it also
the docs never told us to get rid of our tank and it improves lack of moisture in our home during heating season - over half of the year
We also chequed about possible bacteria and as far as sea water tanks - we had no possible threats - the situation with sweat water tanks is however the opposite. Esspecially if kids can put their hands in like in kindergarden - where it's highly not recommended for kids with cf to have tanks in the classroom.

I guess you'ld have to ask about possible bacteria growing in the tank, ask for test on water - home test so you can do them often, ask to have rather salt water and perhaps make it that your son can't put his hands in the tank or on the purifier.

Maybe someone else can help more

http://www.thereeftank.com/blog/bacteria/

however
most bacteria that cause disease in marine fish are gram-negative. Ones most commonly associated with these infections are of the genus Pseudomonas and Vibrio, as well as Myxobacteria.
but it was not said if it's pseudomonas aeruginosa
It was also said that's it's possible for the bacteria to get into the seawater tank from your water from the tap.
However most bacteria in tanks cause problems with skin.
I guess it's a hard question... similar to the one weather to allow kids with cf go swimming in public pools or not... or in lakes and so on... pseudomonas is present in all of them

I found this - I thnk it will answere your question best
seems that pseudomonas aeruginosa is not present in marine tanks and filters unless it gets there from an outer source
and marine water for tanks is made from destilated pr reverse osmosis water in which the process eliminated all bacteria and viruses
But I'ld ask my question here:

http://www.cftrust.org.uk/aboutcf/asktheexpert/archivequestion/#pets

"Question: Risk from fish tanks
My younger brother has CF and grows Pseudomonas aeruginosa already. I want to buy a tropical fish tank, but obviously due to the warm water bacteria are bound to grown even if the tank is cleaned regularly. So I just wonder whether or not anything would grow in the water that would affect by brother's condition?

Answer
Fish tanks are not usually a risk to people with CF provided they are clean and maintained properly. It would be better if the person with CF is not the one responsible for cleaning the tank, but from your question it sounds as if you are the one who would be looking after the fish."

In other words my daughter can help feed our fish but can't be around when cleaning samps-refigium. We have our tank smap outside of our home in the garage
I guess you can have your crab

Okay, as a person with CF, I had several hermit crabs, hamsters, dogs, cats, current have two cats. Now here is the part that is going to make parents mad, sometimes you just have to let your kids be kids or just decide put them in a bubble. No you didn't blame CF for not getting the pet, but it certainly sounds to me people are used to hearing it.

Hello! To be honest, I never thought of the hermit crab being a problem... but, with that being said, I've had hermit crabs (land ones... with the sand, not water) for 4 years now and I've been fine with them. I change their tank often and give them enough water to stay cool (if need be) and to drink, but at least for me, I've never had a problem with them health-wise (I did one have two that fought all the time, and I now have one whose a bit nasty and on the pinchy side, but that's alright).

Again, I had never even thought it would be a problem, but I haven't seen any negative turn health-wise.
