Hermit Crab

Hello! To be honest, I never thought of the hermit crab being a problem... but, with that being said, I've had hermit crabs (land ones... with the sand, not water) for 4 years now and I've been fine with them. I change their tank often and give them enough water to stay cool (if need be) and to drink, but at least for me, I've never had a problem with them health-wise (I did one have two that fought all the time, and I now have one whose a bit nasty and on the pinchy side, but that's alright).

Nice move about explaining the reasons aren't the CF but your son's age. And yes them using the full Cystic Fibrosis does open doors to talk about. Try to play it as something he has to deal with, not something that's limiting him. We all have our flaws and struggles in life, people with CF's struggles are just a little easier to see then most.

It's funny that was the first pet I let my CF child have.....Not that his doctor thought he needed any pets at all...  We still have five in a tank although he doesn't really get them out anymore... At first he did, lol He would build lego cities and then the Hermit Crabs would climb over them and the hot wheel cars like an old B rated movie, lol ....then I'd wash the blocks and cars in hot soapy bleachy water, of course....I think the big issue here is teaching good hand washing along with the pets. I really pushed my son to learn early to not touch his face especially at stores or after touching pets, ect..To use purel at the store often and before meals when we're out.  As long  as that's in place I think most none fur pets are ok........Furry pets of course are more loveable and touchable and my son didn't stop pushing til he got something he could hold and love on. We got a cat a year ago and I vacumme daily and do the furniture also, regular washing of the cat too, but it hasn't seemed to make a difference in his sinus or lungs at this point.....His second pet was a leopard gecko. Since they can have salmonella? Good hand washing was important to everyone who held them or cleaned their tanks? Not just my son with CF..... I think it made it easier on him too. Everything can't be about CF all the time but with some good care guide lines I think a small none aggressive hermit crab or two wouldn't hurt your son in anyway. He might get a kick out of feeding them grapes and crackers, just remember the big ones can draw blood. The more they are held the calmer they are too. My niece wanted one but was afraid to hold them in the store so that was a good way for it to be ruled out, lol But once they get the notion that CF takes everything good from them it's hard to reverse.....

In my personal experiences any sort of tank causes the air around it to get nasty when it's hot, and generally makes it hard to breath around them.

I remember the last place I lived in had like 2 salt water and 1 fresh water aquarium (2 in the house 1 in the garage) and I just had to steer clear of those areas of the house because of how it made the air feel to inhale it.

There were also alotta cats and dogs there and they also stank up the place and shed everywhere and made breathing a nightmare for me (especially when I got sick).

So yeah.. im against pets these days, lol.

Should it just be a tiny tank tho that's kept clean regularly, then it shouldn't be an issue.

I got my first hermit crab in college. I had it for 4 years I think. While in college I eventually cultured mycobacterium abscessus and b. cepecia. It never occured to me it could have been from the hermit crab. I used coconut husk instead of sand for bedding material though.

Hmm. I lived in the dorm my freshman year so I always assumed I got the M. Abscessus from the showers there an I never knew where I got the b. cep from... I have pondered if it was because when I first started sinus flushes I used tap water... then the next time I got a culture I had b. cepecia in it.
