Hello everyone, just an update on Ashton. We got admitted Tuesday night(i think) HAHA it all runs together after a while.. We are at Riley Hospital for children in indianapolis.. anyways ashton got RSV. He had 2 shots before getting it so hopefully that helped and he didnt get it as bad. Now he is doing better just a little junky in his lungs but he has been getting CPT 4 times a day and albuterol every 4 hours with his pulmuzyme 1 time a day.. They have him on IV antibitotics and steroids and hopefully we get to go home on monday or tuesday.. Has anyone else had to deal with the RSV even with the shots??? If so did the shots help..

I also want to let everyone know that i will be inviting another family to join this forum they are across the hallway from us in the hospital and there little girl was diagnosed after she was admitted.. Hopefully we can help them understand the disease a little better and how important it is to stay on top of things.. Next time i see them i will give them the address..

Well i will check back in when i get the chance to get down here to the library.. usually it is when he is sleeping..

talk to everyone later

Hi Christi, I have heard of others getting RSV even after the vaccinations, I believe there are different strains or something (sort of like with the flu). Anyway, I don't know how the cases with the vacc. compare to those w/o the vacc. but HollyCathryn posted a lot of info on the RSV Vacc. on here recently, maybe there is something about it in there. Her post shouldn't be too far down the list line bc it was just a week or so ago.

I hope Ashton is doing better soon and your stay is short. Sorry to hear of another family getting this diagnosis but it may be nice for your families to lean on eachother right now. Keep us updated on your guy when you have a chance!

Hugs,
Kelli - mom of Sydney 2.5 wcf

Sorry to hear about the RSV. Two of my children got RSV when they were babies. We then got the immunizations, I beleive we went in for several shots throughout the RSV season. Although it has been several years, and it is hard to remember yesterday, let alone years ago. Good luck, and hope you are out of the hospital soon.

Hopefully we will get to go home today sometime.. THe past 2 nights though Ashton has lost 5 ounces a night and he is eating great so i think that they are going to talk to the nutritionist and see if he just needs and extra enzyme.. so we will wait and see..

They are supposed to get the RSV she once a month throughout the RSV season ashton is due for his next shot on march 7th.. I think that they can still get RSV it just isnt as severe as it would be if he hadent gotten the shot...

Well like i said hopefully we will get to go home today on oral antibiotics, because we have an appointment with the pediatrician tomarrow and an appointment with the CF clinic on Wednesday so they can monitor his weight that way....

When DS was first diagnosed, he had a horrible head cold and had to have a test for RSV. I was terrified 'cuz a coworkers son had it and had to be hospitalized and developed asthma because of it. I did a lot of research on RSV while waiting for the test result -- RSV is basically made up of a number of viruses, so it's hard to pinpoint what particular strain causes it. Also, you can still catch rsv with the synnagis shots, but symptoms usually aren't as severe or last as long. DS didn't have RSV, but did have an upper respiratory bug and we upped his beatings to 4 x a day with nebs and gave him mini-beatings more frequently to get the junk moved up and out. Liza

RSV from what I've heard from my sister in law (SIL), is a really really bad cold or upper respiratory infection with lots and lots of snot. Bleah!

An RSV shot or synnagis shot is given primarily to preemies the first year of life during RSV season --- October thru April. It's given once a month and is pretty spendy. Basically all kids at some point are going to get RSV, but as you get older, it ends up being less severe -- may just end up being a stuffy nose, head cold. Problems occur with teeny tiny babies 'cuz their airways and nasal passages aren't very big, and they have a tougher time expelling all that snot. So a lot of times when infants get it, they end up being hospitalized 'cuz they can't breathe -- require nebs, sometimes steroids, oxygen... Liza

Yea the main reason that we got admitted was ashtons rapid breathing and congestion and they just increased his nebs and put him on steroids.. i think that is where we got lucky because he didnt need oxegyn or anything just iv antibiotics and steroids and a little fluid when he lost his appetite..
