Hey Ladies....

I was wondering what those of you who use birth control use? My old GYN put me on a really high dose of birth control pills (50mcg) figuring that my constant antibiotics would speed up the metabolism of the pill. My new GYN thinks that I should seek out info from my pulmonologist to see if other CF women are on a lower dose successfully because such a high dose should be avoided. However my CF doc doesn't want to go there.

So long story short...how many CF woman use a regular does pill and have it work successfully??

Thanks for any info!

I have used regular birth control and its never been a problem. I use ortho-tri cyclen. Its a pretty regular dose. I've never cared about being on "low dose" pills simply because I tolerate the normal dose fine, but my CF doctor really thinks that the pill, any of them, works fine for cf'ers.

Dawn,

I was using the patch...you know, the one they put the FDA warning out on? Heh. Anyway, I ordered my perscription changed IMMEDIATELY. My GYN put me on Yasmin, and I've been taking it since...well, yesterday ^_^;; So I'm not really sure how well it works, but I was referred to my current GYN specifically because she's delt with other CF women before. So I trust her judgment. Says on the front; drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol tablets, 3mg/0.03 mg, if that's of any use to you.

im on one that has 35mcg estrogen in it. works perfectly. i take it for 6 months straight and i dont have any breakthrough bleeding. the same cant be said for one i tried that had 20 mcg in it [loette, microgynon 20]. that ended up in disaster. i think a 50mcg pill to start off with is overkill. you should try 30 first. then if that doesnt work try the 35 one. then if that fails use the 50.

I am on a regular bc pills. Its called Levlen 28. I think it is the second highest, I'm not sure. I was on one called Ovcon35 but I got sick from it. My GYN doctor tried me on a "low dose" and worked up to a higher dose. Since it was for regulation, we tried different strength until things were straightened out. Everyone's body is different so u and your doctor will need to find a place to start and go from there, adjust based on your needs.

dawn,

i wanted to add that i talked a bit about this w/ my cf doctor my last visit. i was concerned that my pill may have been making me feel down and wanted to explore being on a lower dose. (being on antibiotics will decrease the effectiveness of ALL pills, i believe, for that month anyway, so back up birth control should always be used during these times--this is just a sad fact for us.)

BUT, my doctor pulled up some studies in his data base and he found one that said that CF women actually absorbed MORE of the hormones from their pills than "normal" women. this is something to keep in mind when deciding which dose is best for you.

When I was taking birth control I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen on a slight higher dose, but I think they like to match you up to your body weight/size, and how you filter things out. I never had a problem while on it.

Kinda off topic but maybe someone has an anwser.

I use NuvaRing, which you insert (vaginally<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">) and take out the 4th week so you can have your period. The thing is, the hormones are directly absorbed into the blood stream...that is, it bypasses the digestive system completely. Do you think antibiotics would have any affect on the effectiveness of this method??

And if you don't mind the thought of where it goes, this is a great method. I've had no problems, and it's on less pill i have to take (or forget to take) on a daily basis.

I'm also on a 35mcg estrogen one and I can also take it for 6 months without breakthrough bleeding! It's wonderful. I had a lot of breakthrough bleeding with Levlen even without skipping sugar pills. Yay for 35mcg.

I use Lutera. It's an extremely low dose pill (I can't even miss a dose). I started on Ortho-Tri-Cyclen but it was actually affecting me mentally. I would get extremely depressed and go into these weird rages. My Gyno said I was reacting to the high dose (she also said few people react this way). I've been on the Lutera for about 5 months now and I have my mind back. I still get a little down every now and then but it's much easier to handle.

my opinion is...
if he IS special to you and you DO like him then CALL HIM.
Sometimes you have to give a person the benefit of the doubt and forgive. It sucks sometimes.
But if he's worth it...then he's worth it.
let us know what happens.
