My doctor said it could be gall stones, but maybe not since I haven't had any pain... Anyone else have high billirubin for another reason?

sometimes medications -- Certain IV meds... DS had issues from being on TPN as an infant.

DS was put on Actigall and it helped. We were told when he was a teen that they'd probably do an ultrasound on his gall bladder to see if it was "happy and healthy" as there can be issues with sludge, gall stones, etc

High bilirubin is caused by a multitude of liver issues.

Bilirubin is removed from the bloodstream by the liver, and then incorporated into bile and excreted out of the body via the GI system.

Gallbladder issues, including gallstones can cause it as the gallbladder collects/stores bile. As can liver failure, biliary obstructions, or as Liza pointed out meds that impact liver function (of which there are more than you can count).

Did your dr have a plan to evaluate? A ultrasound is non-invasive and would show most of the reasons I mentioned, including gallstones.....

I second Toms response. A lot of CFers have high/elevated Liver Function tests due to medications taken...

Apparently, he's going to call again on Friday and we will set up an ultrasound. I was just curious in advance of what some causes could be. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I had high billirubin AFTER having my gall bladder removed.
For a long time we though every thing was cool and the DR put me on ursodiol to combat it.
Back in October we suddenly figured out what was causing this: even though I had no gall bladder I had stones! It seems the stones/sludge had blocked the common bile duct. I had to have a minor surgery to remove 'rocks & sludge' & in the process, they enlarged the size of the opening in the common bile duct.
I was told by my DR's this doesn't happen often at all.
Usually, after someone has the gall bladder removed you never have problems in that area again.
Leave it to me to be different!
Best of luck to you, I hope they figure out what the problem is BEFORE you have to experience the pain of gall bladder/liver issues.
A Happy, Healthy New Year to you & yours.
