High fever in 4 yr old

Though my daughter doesn't have Cf, theres so many parents here I just can't think of a better place to ask this.
Yesterday my daughter had a fever of 104 from 3pm-12 midnight. No other big symptoms, except her saying her body ached which I'd expect, glassy eyes, sleepy/out of it and crying. This fever really knocked her out of it.
She has only had a fever up to 102 before when she was a baby, so this is totally out of the ordinary.
I sat next to her for 6 hrs and made her drink and drink until she got about 12 oz of fluid in her. (she didn't want to drink) Her temp got up to 104.4 and then I gave her motrin which calmed her down and brought the fever down.
This morning, she's tired, her temp is about 99 but other than she's fine.
Any ideas as to what the heck that was? I was really sure she was getting the flu last night or something big.

it could be strep throat. My dd w/cf just went through something like that: very high fever and not much else, did not even complain of sore throat. I took her to the ped's office and it was strep throat.

I'd echo strep. That is really going around where we live. Sore throat can be less severe for little ones than it generally is with adults, and kids can also present with gi symptoms, but significant fever seems pretty universal to strep no matter what other stuff you see.

I'd also look for a rash to pop out... she is at a very common age for roseola, and that is a scary one because roseola is completely benign- but you don't know that's all it is until you see the rash. And the rash doesn't come till the high fever (which can last for several days) breaks!

I'm glad she seems much better today... I hope that whatever that was stays away now and if you never figure it out, at least it doesn't come back!

No rash, but she has been saying her tummy hurts all day, and actually holding it and crying. Poor thing. I can tell its cramping. She had a nasty looking bm too, so we'll see.
This winter is just one virus after the next.

In our area there's some sort of nasty stomach bug going around. Higher fevers, digestive upset --- both ends. My boss had it for a couple days last week and I was ready to hose down his office with lysol.

IMO keep her hydrated, keep up with the pain reliever/fever reducer. Poor thing! And poor mommy, too.

Hi, we have had the same. Some nasty tummy bug - 3 days very high fever - up to 40 celsius and digestive upset and tummy problems. We got extra fluids - a special mix of minerals and salts - I'm not sure how to name it in english (Hydronea)- and medicne for stomach (Smecta)- to calm it down - that was all. And medicine to keep the fever down. But we went to see the doc. The stangest was that it was only Joanna sick - none of us had problems. Zuznna - I guess - was ok since she's on breast and was prtected by me.

Well my 2 yo had a high fever like that about a month ago. Went up to 104 as well. Never had any other symptoms except the fever (and acting like she had a high fever though most of it was overnight) and vomiting once. There are thousands of viruses out there and some of them can cause high fevers. I wouldn't worry about it as long as it can be brought down by meds and she is acting ok when not feverish.
