Hives, rashes or bug bites

My son, who does not have CF got this awful rash/hive/? bug bites all over his legs yesterday. It looked pretty awful, itchy and red, not sure where he got it. But I immediately gave him a good dose of benadryl and rubbed on hydrocortisone cream. It helped sooo much. Our CF doc and ped always tell us not to give Maggie benadryl because it will dry her out. They've drilled this into me, So what'll give for allergic reactions and such. She's going to camp in a couple weeks so I figure it's possible she'll get bit by something. What happened to my son just got me thinking. Maggie has had benadryl once when she was getting Vanco(red man syndrome) and it did seem to dry her out.

When DS was about a year old he had a horrible reaction to bug bites -- rash & wheezing and he was put on zyrtec; however, this was prescribed by a peds doctor and not his CF doctor. I did notice that almost instantly the bug bites, even old ones disappeared. Might be worth checking into with your cf doctor...

Nowdays, I use -- benydryl, sting-eeze, aveeno, or calamine on the spots when I first notice them. If I don't, he'll start scratching and make things worse. And he does have an prescription hydrocortisone ointment he uses if he gets really bad.

Be very careful with benadryl and zyrtec.... both are drying and are a no-no for CFers.

Try Claritin or (weak drug) Allegra (just as powerful as zyrtec). These two do not have anti-cholinergic effects.

I detail anti-histamines more on my blog at: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://blogs.cysticfibrosis.com/categories.cfm?catid=2090&flcache=6528705&entercat=y">http://blogs.cysticfibrosis.co...che=6528705&entercat=y</a> (anti-histamines explained)

That's why I mentioned asking your doctor about the zyrtec -- we used it once after taking DS to urgent care because he had such a reaction to bug bites, but we never had use for it again and tossed it. Figured we'd contact his CF doctor if he ended up having a similar reaction.
