I am 18 with CF and luckily have only had to go to the hospital 1 time when I was 5. I am doing a report on CF and was wondering how often most CF patients visit the hospital?

My daughter has recently been going into hospital twice a year, some times 3 times depending on what nasty virus she has caught at the time.

FOr years I went for years inbetween. As I have gotten older the admits have become more frequent. It went from 5 years to 3 years to 18 months & this year I am down to 6 months. Of course this doesnt mean I wont have another good run, but its harder to get it.

i think it's bizarre how people congratulate others for hospital infrequency. if your FEV1's are below 90 and you haven't been in the hospital that often, you're doing something wrong.

infrequent hospitalizations aren't a good thing unless your PFT's are sky high (meaning you don't need to be hospitalized).

i would rather have an FEV1 that's above 90 and go into the hospital 2-4 times a year than be able to say i've been in the hospital only 5 times in 25 years (which is my status).

just my comment on a bizarre phenomenom i see going on on this board....

When I was younger I went in the hospital every year regardless of infection or not. Say 1.5 years old -10 years old.

Then I had to change docs cause my old doc passed away. The functioned on the let's keep her out of the hospital as long as we can attitude and I went 3 years without a hospital stay - even though I desperately needed it. By the time I went in I was 14 and begging them to just give my IV meds. After that I went in about 1 time a year again because I prefered to stay well than to get god awful sick.

Since changing to Adult Care at 21 (3 years ago). I have been in the hospital on average 1 time every 7-11 months.

I have recently changed docs though - recently as in 4 months ago - and he wants to admit me to the hospital for IVs every 3-4 months regardless of infection. So that will be my new norm I suppose.

Take Care,
Lindsey

I've never had to stay in the hospital since I was diagnosed (when I was 8). My PFT's are low, I have Staph and Pseudo, but for some reason I never get sick.

I am not sure what FEV1's are, but I have visited my CF doctor 1nce a year for the past 10 years or so, and have gotten my yearly blood tests and done a breathing test where i have to blow out really hard for a long time and hold it, and I have ranked better then a normal person without CF. My CF dr has been more concerened with me gaining wieght then anything else. I stay active and play sports and ice hockey which my doctor said is good because if I can handle exercising in the cold air my lungs are in good shape. I also rarley get sick. I think I just have a more mild case of CF.
