hot tubs

I live in England and we are thinking about getting a hot tub, but I seem to recall that public ones should really be avoided. Is this the case if it's your own, whilst we were looking over the weekend I realise that a home one would be kept clean after every use. Hot tubs are not very popular in the uk. The one we have been looking at are imported from America (the Artic range). I am going to clinic on thursday so I will ask my docs for a medical view then, but I just wondered if anyone actually had their own.

Thank you

Cheryl :)

I have a jacuzzi bathtub and love it(I think my girlfriend loves it even more), never had a problem. we also have a community jacuzzi in our complex that i use quite often and have never had a problem with that one either. I don't see anything wrong with having your own, just keep it chlorinated and you should be fine. How can hot tubs not be popular in the uk? That's a travesty, I tell you! I enjoy nothing more than ending my day with a beer and a soak.

I believe you aren't suppose to use it if it is above a certain temp because of pseudomonas. But, we have one and my daughter uses it all the time...we just keep the temp under 100.

My husband and I have a hot tub (I am the one with CF.) Ours is out doors which they don't mind as much because it is out in the open. We treat it with chemicals weekly so it can't grow something nasty and we also pump out all of the water and refill it. (that is supposed to be every 6 months)
I really like our hot tub and we use it about 4 nights per week. It is so relaxing and it's also a great opportunity to communicate with your spouse.
I'd check with your dr.'s and see what they have to say...but my dr's had no problem with me having one.
Sincerely,
Kelli

I think I heard if it's an outdoor one it's fine because it gets ventiilation but indoor ones are a no no. I am not 100% positive about that though!

similar question from me please - Hi,
we have a jacuzzi/ whirlpool type bath that came with our home when we moved in. I've often read about the risks of pseudomonas from standing water/ in the bathroom etc. We don't use the jets for a bath or even power it on but am still wondering if we should get rid of the jacuzzi bath as there is may be a risk of contamination / infection from the jet sprays.
We obviously clean the bath very regularly for the kids but there are 45 'jet' holes in the tub which in my mind poses a risk.
has anyone a similar experience or advice they could offer? rip it out or spend thousands on cleaning fluids ?

Years ago I seem to recall reading an article about jacuzzi jets and how the water does tend to sit in those jet holes and potential for bacteria to grow. Really grossed me out when I thought about the bathtub in my hospital room when DS was born that had jacuzzi jets. Bleah!

A relative looked at putting a jacuzzi tub into their lake home, but declined after hearing regular maintenance involved running so many gallons of water thru the jet every month and with a septic/holding tank didn't think in that case it would be a good idea.

You may want to contact the manufacturer or a local retailer and see what they suggest just for regular maintenance, as well as prevention of bacteria or mold.

I just had to reply to this post. I am a 40 year old CFer. I have enjoyed many good nights in hot tubs. I cannot say that once I was infected. I know that the one way I get infected is from sick people. I avoid hospitals and I ask my partner not to share utensils and glassware. I also use purell now--often. I think that we all go a little over board trying to figure out what is bad for us. I saw a post stating that showers give off bacteria. I am just saying that there is bacteria everywhere. I am going to live my life and not worry that much. Also, I had a Jucuzzi tub with jets---no problem. For cleaning--- the air jets tubs are 1,000% cleaner and probably more sterile.

There was an article in the paper a couple years ago, which talked about the amount of bacteria in hot tubs vs. swimming pools (millions of particles vs. less than a hundred). Warmer temps allows more things to grow -- talked about millions of nasty fecal particles and other things growing in hot tub water. And also about tubs with hot tub jets, hot they're difficult to clean/maintain, so things tend to live/grow in the jets. Bleah, when I gave birth to DS the hospital room had a hot tub. Ewww!

We used to have a hot tub and used it more in the winter months than summer -- when you're sitting in the water, you tend to inhale a lot of the steam, etc. because your face is just above the water level. Our hot tub had a bromine float, sometimes if we just filled the float, we'd be inhaling bromine fumes. Other times our friends sons would come use our hot tub and we'd end up draining it afterwards as we weren't quite sure if they bothered to take bathroom breaks. Sometimes in the summer, the pump wouldn't run as often 'cuz of the heat, so the water would stagnate -- we'd find a bit of greenish algae? growing on the inside edge of the cover.

There are also several articles out there about a rash people get from hot tubs, which is basically pseudomonas follicultis. I know that's one of the issues with a local indoor waterslide park.

Basically you just don't know how hotels and other people maintain their hot tubs. Some people are meticulous, others aren't. With our we did well with maintenance in the winter, but summertime when we didn't use it as often --- not so great.
